Default Your second chance is up.

So, I had issues with a fishing buddy a few months ago. He kneeled and kissed ass, so I made nice. Set up a trip to take my boat out today, with my kids, and catch croaker.
yeah, no. 0600 I call him. "I didn't get enough sleep, can we postpone?"
you. You lost your second chance.
But now I had a problem. I woke my kids up at 0600 promising them a day fishing.
So we hit a local pond, rented a jon boat, and caught little fish.

Havin a snack

Electric motor hauling ass

I caught a bass!!!!!

This goose swam right up to the boat, looking ready for a hand out.

Salvaged the day and spent quality time with my kids. The boy is about as hardcore as they come and can spend an entire day fishing. Good kid.

your (ex) buddy really should have planned better
I know it ticks me off when I depend on someone
and they dont hold up their end
BUT
I'd rather have someone cancel on me
than go out with me when they are in poor condition
especially when I've got kids with me

I didn't elaborate too much in my first post.
Said buddy is going through a divorce. Last trip out he had a meltdown. Whiney, bitchey, ate an entire thing of chicken that was brought for the 5 guys on the boat, and then wouldn't follow directions at the ramp.
I told him I wasn't going to let his personal drama bring me down. A few weeks later he calls me, making nice, so I gave him a second chance. This was the week his wife actually moved out (although she's been shacked up for months now). Thus, this morning's lack of sleep (second night in a row he told me).
We've had long chats about his situation on previous trips. I've tried to be a good guy about it, but I'm not going to let his personal drama invade my life everytime I do something with him. Eff that.

So, I agree with you his chances are all used up
but my question still is

If he is a mess and has had little sleep
Do you really want him to show up and go out on the boat with you & your kids ?

By the way nice save giving the kids a great day on the water

I wouldn't even want him whining and talking about his wife shacking up in front of kids that age.

Nice recovery on the fishing trip, there, dad.

Absolutely not of course.
I'm also not going to surround myself with manic people who can't control their personal lives: those types of people are poison.

His life is falling apart and you can't handle a few F'ed up days of fishing? You might want to reconsider the definition of friend.

You should probably also learn to handle a 23' boat on the trailer by yourself (its really not that tough) or hire a mate so the you don't have to rely people who exist in you life to help you with your boat no matter what is going on in their life. I think you call these people "friends", luckily my friends have a different definition.

Well, it's true that first divorce is a real booger. It gets a little easier the second time. I can't speak for the third one yet.

Jason

I'm down with the poor bastard's three divorces, his excess drama, his meltdown, you counseling him, even him running the boat into the trailer. BUT, eating all the chicken for five guys?? THAT is totally effed and unforgivable. Shudda put him through the chum grinder right then.

Harsh language maybe, but the dude doesn't know me, doesn't have the full story, and went off half cocked. SOP on this board.

I can understand the guy wanting a shoulder to cry on, but that kind of thing is not for a fishing day with the kids.

A tittie bar with a pocketful of $1's for the thongs and a bunch of Jack Daniels, maybe.

But not a family fishing day.

Jason,
Kudos on get the kiddos out even if the day started heading south early, heck I'll bet they loved the pond afterall..

Now start working on the self load/unload, try the middle of the day when there is less ramp traffic matter of fact start today!!!

Personally I would rather have my family out with me anytime over others...

Jason - Life's too short to waste on Drama Queens. If he's on
his THIRD divorce there's got to be a reason. Hang with the kids.
They'll be grown and gone before you know what hit you.

Might be a stretch from Williamsburg, but it's Lake Ridge park on the Occoquoan Reservoir, which is above the fall line. LMB, perch, sunfish, catfish. Not sure what else might be in there.
