Random Quote: I drink in 'Moderation', it's a long drive, but the beers cheap & always ice cold!
The boat is a 1978 24' Topaz that I restored a few years back (some of you fellow "THT old timers" may remember all my posts on here when I was redoing it). I did not take a picture of the device used to make the hole, but now wish I had.
The process is basically to measure where the center of the hole is going to be on each side (multiple measures and triangulation!) then drill a pilot hole in each side. We have a long piece of all thread with a bracket and another piece of all thread perpindicular to it. Once the all thread is through the two pilot holes the 2nd piece is adjusted to the diameter of the tube and then you just spin it around and mark the hole so it can be cut out with a rotary bit. The location of the pilot holes is the toughest part of this process....
I think it is a very helpful addition to a single screw inboard...no matter what the size. We don't need a lot of stuff we put on our boats but they do make things much easier.
I run my boat a lot by myself and keep the boat on a boat lift in a canal where the dominant summer winds come straight down the canal - can make for some interesting docking manuevers. The boat, being a single inboard only backs straight back and to the port (with the prop walk), so the bow thruster allows me to back up directionally. I also do a fair amount of bottom fishing so this will help me hold over a spot like a twin screw with a lot less effort than I have to do now. It isn't a must have and in 10 years of owning the boat I've got in trouble twice so it definately isn't a "must have" and a convenience item.
I appreciate the nice comments on the boat. Here are a couple of more pics of the progress - more next week... will be done by next weekend for 4th of july outing!
