Default Ucluelet June 2009

Took 2 buddies and my father out fishing for a few days in Ucluelet on Van Isle. We were pampered by the phenom weather for most of the trip and blessed with good fishing. A heat wave brought high temps of mid to upper 20's C on the water (over 33 degrees C inland!) which is very unusual for June and even August for that matter. Little wind and very minimal ocean swell made for smooth lake like conditions for 3 of the 4 days. Had to troll up most of our small halibut but did manage to jig a nice 30+ pounder up from 200 feet of water. Good signs of Coho salmon as there are good numbers of them already with decent sizes for June. Average chinook salmon are larger than normal for this time and i managed to land my largest June chinook ever at 25-26 pounds! I was stoked! The troll was pretty consistent with a couple double headers on the downriggers. Flat seas made for good sight seeing of pods of Gray whales, Humpbacks clearing the water, white sided porpoise, and other sea life. Going back in July and August, can't wait

hi dave,
the other fish are rock fish/cod. The black and blue rock fish are particularly fun to catch as they are feisty and found top, mid and on the bottom. Most other rock fish are caught on the bottom. The black and yellows are China rock fish, also caught a few coppers, quillbacks, and the bright orange fish is a yelloweye rock fish. Rock fish are great eats (tasty firm white meat) and as you can kinda see they come in a variety of cool colors to boot. There might be a cabezon mixed in that bunch too which looks like a cross between a pacific ling cod and large sculpin (might be the ugliest fish but 'dems dang tasty).

Took my teenage son to Uceulet in 2002. Memorable trip. Fished and stayed at the Canadian Princess fleet of charters. Good salmon fishing with the occasional halibut.

For all interested, this is a most beautiful setting and good fishery. I highly recommend.
