After nearly 40 years of service in the United States Navy, Kennedy was officially decommissioned on 1 August 2007. The ship is berthed at the NAVSEA Inactive Ships On-site Maintenance facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, awaiting determination of her fate.
Valid point on age of photo. It was sent to me and I just noticed that there are F-14s' on the flight deck. They also have been out of service for a few years.
When we visited Malta on the Forrestal in the late 60's, we had to anchor outside. Pretty neat place, alot of history there. I seriously doubted that was a correct location of the JFK, after remembering we anchored off. I went to goggle earth though and found the dock in Valletta. They have a pictue caption there, and it shows a cruise ship docked at the same location. I guess they made improvements in the harbor to accomodate larger ships in the last 41 years. LOL!

That entrance is mighty small. This is us docked there in June, and a picture of the entrance. When you arrive, there is a palce on the hill that was uded for the filming of "Troy".
Yeah Malta is amazing we pulled in there on an FFG about three years ago, supposedly it was a refuge for the christians during the crusades thats why that whole harbor is fortified and the castle and fort surround the harbor.
I was on the Kennedy when she pulled into Malta when these pix were taken. This was on the Millenium cruise during late 1999 early 2000. I was embarked with VFA-86 (F/A-18C Hornets) and yes those were the F-14D Tomcats of VF-102, the F-14's were decomed later and now VF-102 flies the F/A-18E Super Hornets and has been re-classified as VFA-102 (I'm pretty sure). It's a good thing they decommissioned that ship, it was in absolutely the worst shape of any ship I had ever served aboard.
I pulled this information from my Cruise book from that cruise.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important tha his own personal safetly, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of BETTER men than himself"
