Default 1/4 Scale 32' Carolina Build

I'm going to let the cat out of the bag. I've been working, slowly, on a 1/4 scale (104") 32' Carolina Custom project with jigs provided by Gene (cbboatworks). My son and I have been building this together over the last 3-4 months and have recently been able to get a fair amount accomplished. We have a looong way to go though! She will be powered by two 2230 Series Brushless motors by Neumotors and they will be coupled to two shafts turning 65 mm 3 blade props. These motors are EXTREMELY powereful and are often used in military applications, I'm told. This boat is going to be very detailed and I will not be satisfied with anything less than perfection with regard to the finish of her. She will have a teak transom, toe rail, and sole and will be set up as a center console. The hull sides will be a dark royal blue and the bottom and topside will be white. The hull is constructed in the following manner:
Keel, Stringers, and ribbands: clear doug fir
Bottom: 4 mm okume and 1/16" balsa
Sides: 1/16" basswood and 1/16" balsa
All will be glassed using West Systems Epoxy

I need to send out some "props" to cbboatworks (for making the jigs available) Vic and Tarbaby (for providing the two threads that really inspired me to do this and for answering all of my questions) and to Booker (for providing valuable information regarding the hydrodynamics of a boat like this) Thanks to all of you!
I added a bit of rake to the bow to give it a little more aggressive style and I'm really pleased with how it is turning out. I can tell you that doing this boat in 1/4 scale adds many complexities that you wouldn't encounter with the full size boat. Something else I'm very pleased with is, my son, who is 6, is learning a great deal about craftsmanship and attention to detail that is already carrying over into other things he does.

Here are some pics. Enjoy.

Power:

This motor is about the size of a beer can and can generate 15 hp at max. output. Yes, I said 15hp and there will be 2 of them!

She will be named : (Admirals nickname)

That is going to be awesome. I like the sportfish (flybridge) idea personally.
What are you going to use for radio and servos?

1/4 scale servos and I already have an Airtronics M8 radio. This radio is used for all my RC stuff. It holds data for 7 vehicles. You just scroll thru and select which model your using.

That's a very cool project. I'm looking forward to seeing it progress.

I'm also curious how many Corona caps it will take to complete it.

That is AWESOME! Fantastic work-- I've got into RC stuff within the past year, 1 heli, 3 planes and 2 sailboats- great hobby. Can't wait to see pics of it finished!

I changed the rake at the bow, which makes it longer.

I thought I had my heart set on putting in one of these

It's a 45cc Blata, by MHZ. The Blata prooved to be more hassle than it was worth and they are expensive. I'm not trying to stick a ton of money, that I don't have, into this thing. With the exception of the jigs and the epoxy, I had everything else already from other projects. Also, it wasn't a guarantee that this engine would turn the submerged props, sufficiently to get to speed. 95% of all RC Boats run surface drives, not submerged. The Blata has about 13hp but it needs to be spinning at 14,500 rpms to put out that much power. They don't have a great deal of torque and I think you can imagine what it sounds like at 14,500 rpms. That would take away from the whole boat.

So I did a lot of research on electric motors, since they have enormous torque and found a hobby store in NY that specializes in big-power electric motors. The motors will be powered by 2ea - 6000 mah LIPOS batteries. Keep in mind, that 15 hp is at maximum output. These motors can turn 60,000 rpms, all day long and without being obnoxiously loud. Mine won't, but they could.
