VERY NICE!! I built on while in high school but no where near that nice. I used electric motors and a gear that turned two props with one motor, She would only go a few knots. Though about using a weed eater motor but mine is only about 4 ft long which would have been too much power,
I thinking a couple little 3 cyl. Kabota's [ Diesel's ] or at least a single.
Can't wait to see the numbers on this ride. :]

I thought breifly about putting a small jet ski (standup) engine in it fed to a single 95 mm prop.
I have a friend who has a watercraft dealer and he has about 30 of them just siiting around. Too much hassle and weight though.
One thing to think about is using that epoxy with your son around.I hope you are venting the area real good.I don't think you want to kill off brain cells in him.
I would think a jetski motor wouldn't be that much weight and there should be enought room under the floor boards if you used a jackshaft, mounting the motor in the console or cabin.
That looks like an awesome project. I would love to do a 1/2 scale to fish small local waters or just take the kids out riding. Any idea if they would help with that?
Small world....I guess great minds think alike. I have been working on a 8 1/2 foot Carolina Express for about 2-3 months now. Working on the second layer of ply now. I have done all the work myself...including the jig, which shows bc it isn't half as professional looking as yours. However, everything is square and all my numbers match up.
One thing I have noticed on yours is it looks like it may be a bit tippy, it has an lot of deadrise for a pretty narrow beam, or maybe the pics are deceiving.

That is going to be a KILLER RC boat! I love it. I would go with the sporty type deck. The CC deck would be cool too but would look better with outboards. I have been an RC boat nut myself for a long time.
Please keep us updated with the progress.
Here is mine.
50" long, its an Apache replica but I badged it as a Scarab for obvious reasons. It has a 26cc 2 stroke water cooled engine with a clutch. it has been clocked at 46 MPH via a hand held GPS in the engine compartment.

Its not a Bonzi, its an Areomarine Laminates Apache 50. I have had it for a while. I bought it as a bare hull brand new in 2000. Sinse then it has had 5 different engine configurations and has a total of about 3 grand into it.
Just like a real boat but on a smaller scale.
This engine I bought in 2004 and it has run a total of maybe 5 hours. This sucker is loud and fast. On a nice calm day in the ocean I had my wife drive the real Scarab and I ran this one right next to us at 40 MPH. The exhaust is water cooled also to it blows a heavy mist of water out the pipe on the transom. It was very cool. I wish I had a 3rd person on my boat with a video camera.
I'm going to let the cat out of the bag. I've been working, slowly, on a 1/4 scale (104") 32' Carolina Custom project with jigs provided by Gene (cbboatworks). My son and I have been building this together over the last 3-4 months and have recently been able to get a fair amount accomplished. We have a looong way to go though! She will be powered by two 2230 Series Brushless motors by Neumotors and they will be coupled to two shafts turning 65 mm 3 blade props. These motors are EXTREMELY powereful and are often used in military applications, I'm told. This boat is going to be very detailed and I will not be satisfied with anything less than perfection with regard to the finish of her. She will have a teak transom, toe rail, and sole and will be set up as a center console. The hull sides will be a dark royal blue and the bottom and topside will be white. The hull is constructed in the following manner:
Keel, Stringers, and ribbands: clear doug fir
Bottom: 4 mm okume and 1/16" balsa
Sides: 1/16" basswood and 1/16" balsa
All will be glassed using West Systems Epoxy
I need to send out some "props" to cbboatworks (for making the jigs available) Vic and Tarbaby (for providing the two threads that really inspired me to do this and for answering all of my questions) and to Booker (for providing valuable information regarding the hydrodynamics of a boat like this) Thanks to all of you!
I added a bit of rake to the bow to give it a little more aggressive style and I'm really pleased with how it is turning out. I can tell you that doing this boat in 1/4 scale adds many complexities that you wouldn't encounter with the full size boat. Something else I'm very pleased with is, my son, who is 6, is learning a great deal about craftsmanship and attention to detail that is already carrying over into other things he does.
Here are some pics. Enjoy.
Power:
This motor is about the size of a beer can and can generate 15 hp at max. output. Yes, I said 15hp and there will be 2 of them!
She will be named : (Admirals nickname)
You have done a great job on this build, It is much harder to build the model that the real thing, keep up the great work. last but not least where are the update pictures???????????????????????
