Peptide - Those are some good points. I don't think most of those higher-tech inspection methods are used by recreational boat companies, likely for financial reasons. Although, with these failures becoming more prevalent, it may not be a bad investment (tough in today's economy though). I think that it would be a good idea if perhaps some sort of standardized, proven cored-laminate inspection process (by ABYC maybe?) was instituted.

Has anyone brought up the possibility that it is not going to happen to the other side of the hull in 5, 50 or 150 hours? Or are we to assume that the only the port side of the hull was layed up on a Friday afternoon????? That boat should be stripped down to the hull, all salvageable parts reused, the hull studied and then destroyed.................PERIOD

GWcpa - 2/12/2009 1:52 PM I'm sure a few tubes of 5200 and some appropriatly places drywall screws were all that was needed for this simple repair. Maybe a little West system. No way it is going to delam again once that stuff kicks off.

That sounds more like an Ocean Yachts to me.

I would venture a guess that you are correct. Maybe the margins aren't there, maybe this hasn't been a big concern in the past. I would think this would be a wake-up call for someone, but who knows...

a company in Italy invented and patended a similar system for boats, GRP and wood constrcution really, I have to find an old mag to find what the system was called but it was also very expensive, altough a company like the Ferretti Group with 1bil EU turnover pre recession which bases its image on quality could really fork out this money as for them it is peanuts really

I am sure they surveyed the hull well, they say they checked a few 630s too
a friend of myn who used to built boats told me this is so much early eighties when there was the oil crisis, and as in that case resin manufecterers made a few errors which costed quite a few mishaps to some builders too, where not we in the same situation on 2007/8 with oil prices hitting a new record evey day

PowerYacht, it was about 1976 when builders started buying cheap resin( I personally think that was more the fault of the builders than the resin suppliers ). Considering what that cost everybody in the boating industry, I doubt very many builders went that way in the recent oil crunch. My resin costs have gone up in the last year but the overall cost of a boat was not greatly impacted by the resin price alone. In today's markets, builders need to work smarter and I think we're seeing some of that( maybe having a little trouble getting smarter all the way down the line). I think the industry advanced a lot in the early 80s because of necessity and necessity is demanding further advancements.
I was outspoken about the failure of this Berterm in the threads about its failure, and Mr. CB Haws I stand by my observations and statements. With over 40 years of boating and over 30 in the repair business, I don't have all the answers, but I too have pondered many questions. The photos clearly showed QC problems and a test as low-tech as dragging the edge of a coin over the installed foam will clearly reveal the voids in the bonding putty that were obviously there.

That's all she needed was a little Duct Tape. The THT experts blew this out of proportion. CB is right, it was a simple skin delamination issue.

"CB is right, it was a simple skin delamination issue. " What in the world is a simple skin delamination issue? I've never heard of such a thing!

Welcome to our forum. You should really start a new thread in the "Boating Forum." (This old thread is in the "Photos Forum."

The new thread will be seen by many and someone can probably give your answer (I am sorry, but I do not know.) When you start the thread, just call it "Missing Bertram Propellers" or something like that, with both "Bertram" and "propeller" in the title.

To start a thread you go first to the Boating Forum and then in the top left corner of the page you will see a box called "New Thread." Simply click it, enter your title and then enter your question. Good luck.
