It will be interesting to see what happens in terms of insurance. I read on another site that was discussing this boat that most boat insurance policies exclude delamination claims.
I am liking my little "tin can" more everyday

you would question the building process if there was a history of incidents like these i guess. on the bright side its amazing that it didnt sink, they must hve done something right.
Poor guy. The last bert that I saw from this same owner was a cherry four stateroom late 90's 60 bertram. This is precisely why biax and triax laminates have no business being in a hull. If you were to go to the boat and grab one of those strands of loose f-glass, you could pull it off from one end of the boat to the other. The second issue is that the core you see is not divincell but instead a non ISO compliant garbage foam core thats made in Hialeah florida with VIRTUALLY NO QC WHATSOEVER! When you make a foam core you're supposed to let it cure in a kiln (as divinicell or corecell does) so the material can fully outgass before its shipped to the builder. In this case there was no time given for the core to cure properly before it was sent to bertram for use, it would literally come out of the manufacturer hot and was driven straight down to bertram to be laminated into the boats. What would happen next was the core would outgas after it was already laminated into the boat therefore creating voids throughout the parts being laminated.
The other major problem at hand here has everything to do with the culture at Ferretti. These guys eliminated most of the inhouse employees that were in charge of laminating, rigging, carpentry etc and instead subbed everything out, in this instance the company that laminated the boat WAS AN AC CONTRACTOR! As far as QC at the factory, I had a good friend that was QC up until a few years ago, after the italians took over, he constantly found fault with their construction techniques and would make a fuss about everything he found, eventually he was told to either STFU about the faults that he found or find another job...
JEEZE! I just realized, I was on that boat about 6 months ago! It was painted at the Richard Bertram yard back then prior to delivery. Does anyone know if a surveyor has looked at it yet?
I walked all over a couple newer Bertrams and I could tell they were no way on par with viking, this just puts the icing on the cake. It will be the best thing if the Italians drop Bertram, some one will eventually resurrect the name

They haveprobably used every core under the sun at one time or another. The reviews mention high-density foam, which suggests a urethane foam. Butone also mentions Klegecell, which isn't made any longer.
The core in the picture does not look like Divinycell. Divinycell H60 is green, but not that shade or surface texture. There are other foam cores on the market that are green as well - Airex C70.75 and several polyurethanes such as Poly-u-macand General Plastics to name a few. In fact, a lot of the foam core manufacturers use similar colors for their foam cores. I linked to some pictures from their web sites to show the foams. I wouldn't recommend H60 or polyurethane in the side of a boat that size, but the C70.75 would be typical in that area.

I agree!.. If Viking is par, Bertram is double eagle!

Is it true that many marine policies issued to boat owners have a specific exclusion for hull delamination??? I thought I remembered reading about this, but I'm not sure. Glossing over my policy, I did not see any mention of this, but it was only a cursory glance...
Intrested to see if there is anyone who can speak for Bertram on this issue...
PtJude
Out of curiosity, when you read your policy did you see any exclusion(s) for "manufacturing defects," "inherent defect," or similar such weasel phrases? I think that is a more common way that the carriers exclude delamination, rather than by doing it straight up. I am not an "insurance guy," so maybe one will comment.

KeyPine, I am an insurance guy and I will take a little issue with "weasel phrases" because there are exclusions in insurance policies for a reason. But, in this case, I really don't know what to say. I am sitting here comparing it to a Chevy Suburban driving down the highway and all the sudden the fender, the hood, and the skin off the driver's door just blow off for no reason. Insurance company? Manufacturer? Who?

The core made in hialeah is definitely not up to snuff. Several years ago their rep cam in and sold me some for my transoms. It out gassed on two boats and I had to fix them at my own expense. I had 2 big bubbles on the transom after the jackplates and motors were already installed. It was the last time I wil ever use it.
I love you guys!! "armchair boat builders" Best part about the internet is you are all experts. Who out here is a real boat builder? I dont mean the guy that filled the holes in his old sea craft and replaced the transom. I mean guys that build boats for a living. After reading this I would say 90% of you think you are boat builders. 2% at most are. Bertram has built over 5,ooo boats how many bertram delams do we know about?
Tell me what kind of boats are all of you guys running around in?
