timing is everything. the new Motorboating just came. full page Bertram ad on page 9 and a nice little blurb about the launch party for the 54. looking at the pics, i think they could have spent the money better.

I was told by a reliable source that when they lifted the boat it crushed even more under its own weight. Remember the old add's that ran with the Bertram coming off of a 20' wave and the owner stating he was glade he owned a Bertram, well I think they should go back to that type of boat building "SOLID FIBERGLASS"
Tony,

Wow you really hit the nail on the head. I remember that ad from the early 80's? Someone here has to post that ad!
That's the add.........some body has to have a old magazine around with that add

what a true shame for all invovled...When this hull was laid up somthing went horiffically wrong and either nobody noticed it, or nobody cared to mention it... could have been a few disgruntiled employees in the laminating crew that said "we'll show these guys" .... In any event...a true shame, thankfully nobody was injured or killed....until the owner gets his hands around the right persons neck....!
I agree with your assessment 100% I think something of this magnatude had to be a conspiracy on more than one level.

Great ad.... I remembered it too but have no old magazines.

I am trying to remember if it was Bert who had another ad where it was hung over a pool and dropped 25' or so with no damage.

The painting should read 'hanging 10' as it surfs along a 20 ft wave

That's not Divinycell core in the hull.

Commuter got it right. Sandwich construction works well when you put it together properly. The bond between the skins and the core is the most critical aspect of sandwich construction. Without it, you don't have a sandwich. Even in solid fiberglass construction, if the plies don't stick together, you are going to have problems.

In this case, there are obviously several issues that resulted in the delamination, but none of them appear to be related to the core material itself. To avoid these sorts of issues, many builders are using vacuum infusion processing with high quality materials to increase the quality of their lamination and take some of the human factor out of the process.

If I was investing that much money in a new boat, I would do my homework on how it was built, visit the factory a few times during construction, and have it surveyed before taking ownership.

Would a survey of the boat when new pick up on the delamination issues?? How do they check for something like that if there is no outer "visible damage"... I guess the question could be rephrased as "What are the warning signs of delamination, and how can you spot it before this happens??"

I think they tap the hull with a "percussion hammer" and can hear voids. I think. That was done to a friend of mines boat and the results were not good.

Yes, a good survey would've found this, ideally on a job of this scope the surveyor would monitor the entire build( hired before the construction starts). The problem that led to this situation was not delamination, it was never bond( the core was never bonded to the skin).
