The birth of a Plate Alloy Offshore Monster - 34 Rock Salt
There have been some really cool build threads in the photo section of glass boats, and boat factories, and cold molded boats etc. Thought I would add a series of photos for the new 34' Rock Salt. The Rock Salt is a new offshore boat that is the brainchild of Jay Perrotta. You guys probably know Jay from the 23' and 26' Black Lab Marine / Pacific Boats. This new offshore boat has been in the works for quite some time and is finally coming to life. I've been watching it along along from cenceptual drawings to the real thing.
Some quick specs - 34' Length, 23" draft, 450 Gal Fuel, 60 Gal Fresh Water, 1050 HP Max, 7,070 lbs, 50 gal livewell, 25 gal transom livewell, In-Deck Fishbox and Huge Coffin Box
The finish will ultimately be bead blasted and coated with Nyalic on the outside and painted on the inside. I'll post more pics as they become available.

Sweet looking Alloy boat......I've owned many alloy boats...all built by Gravois in South LA and I can tell you though they may not ride quite like a glass boat......they are indestructable....and truly bad ass fishing machines!!!

Question for the metal boat guys? Other than the "toughness" everyone keeps mentioning what are the other advantages and disadvantages of metal boats? Are they more expensvie to buy and maintain? I have run many fiberglass boats and never felt worried about the "toughness" regardless of the seas. I am just trying to understand the value proposition that a metal boat brings to the small to mid size fishing boat.

I own one of each. A 23' Glass boat and a 23' alloy boat. Toughness goes a long way. That is probably the biggest thing I notice. I have never felt more secure in a small boat than I do on my metal boat. The second thing is maintenance. When I am done on the metal boat I just hose it off with fresh water. If anything has dried on the deck and doesn't come off with a hose then I might get out a brush. On my glass boat I have to preserve the finish to keep it shiny, otherwise the gel coat will get chalky. Third thing is longevity. There is no wood to rot, no decks to get soft, no fiberglass to repair if you hit a dock too hard. I think it comes down to being simpler and more durable.
Re: The birth of a Plate Alloy Offshore Monster - 34 Rock Salt
Rock Salt is a completely separate thing from Jay's effort with Black Lab / Pacific. Rock Salt is the manufacturer, Rock Salt is owned by Jay Perrotta. With Black Lab Jay is instrumental in the design, but the boats are actually built by Pacific. I am not sure what the ultimate goal is with Rock Salt, whether its a nationwide dealer network or what. I guess if demand warrants it then he'll go in that direction. I know he wants us to help him in the Mid-Atlantic, its a natural extension of what we already do with the Pacific Boats.

As far as the Alloy Vrs. Glass weight deal..........Forget it this boat weighs the same as a Glass boat of the same size.
As far as tough, I run a Pacific 2325CC , I have droped 16 oz weights on the deck of my boat to show people what it does and
the weight get's a imprint of the non-skid on it and nothing is done to the deck [ try that on a glass deck ] I hit a log on Lake Texoma
this year [ missed the lower unit , thank God ] and I cant find a dent or scratch in the hull.
I have damaged docks bumping into them and that did rub the Nyalic coating off a little.
One hull was hit with the whole tread from a diesel truck tire going 70 MPH = 140 mph impact and no dent but it did leave a
rubber mark on the Alloy to be cleaned off.
Another hull ran over a Glass boat , it left a paint mark on the Alloy hull .
One was dropped on the concrete ramp and all it had was a couple tiny , cat like claw marks on the keel.
the list goes on and on, Try some of these with a glass boat , I dont think you will laugh about it.
Now most Alloy boats are not as pretty as a glass boat but we don't have to wax, polish, repair chips, spider cracks, worry about blisters
dings , scrapes.
!/4" 5086 Alloy is dang near bullit proof, it will take small arms fire with just a dent left behind.
With minimal proper care a Alloy hull will out last your Grand kids and their kids.
I'm on my 2nd Alloy , the 1st was a 18' Tinny and now I have a 23 Pacific [ Plate hull ] and the only reason I would get rid of this
hull is to move up to the 26 footer.
It's a ALLOY thang.
aluminumalloyboats.com , has a bunch of METAL if y'all want to see what can be done with ALLOY.
