Random Quote: I owe the government $3,400 in taxes. So I sent them two hammers and a toilet seat.
Okay fellas I would like some input on outriggers. These are he pics with the top on it. I have a set of 19ft single spreader outriggers with a gunnel mount. However with severything being further back on the boat I am not sure they will look right. Can mount them to far forward becaue the top is to wide. Any opinions on what would look nice either mounting options for what I have or should I go with top mounts and say goodbye to the lees?
What else have you done on your boat? Any pictures. I got mine and i would like to get ideas

I have been wondering where this project went. I really enjoyed the pictures and progress so far. It had me looking at a local consignment boat sales place and thinking....what if I bought that one and...

Go for it. It has been a blast. I have learned a lot about boats. Plus on this one I know where everything is at know, every screw and bolt. I would highly recommend a the cheapest best built boat you can find, and go from there.
I will get some more pics up soon. I thought people had lost interest a little. I have put the gas tanks in, all fuel lines, replaced carbs, re-did engine box, and I am fiberglassing the floor in know. I have slowed down because work has been crazy, and with summer here we try to enjoy the other boats we have, plus my father bought a 41 sf and I have been helping him with that. It is ready but has never been fished so it is mising a lot of electronics, outriggers, and rodholders.
Thanks for the interest, makes the work and pictures feel worth it.
Your post was why I bought the project I have now. 72 Formula/Thunderbird Sports Fishing model. I was hoping to keep up with your post so I could see if there was anything you did that might make mine easier. Or learn from any mistakes or the I should have done differents.

I'm still gutting mine(boy, that boat was filled with foam) and trying to remove the huge tank that was covered with more foam. After that, ready to remove stringers and transom core to do all over. Please, keep the pictures coming, they will be my bible

Answer to your outrigger question. First I would have a new top made. Something a little more forward and lower to accentuate the windshield. It would be a hard top for sure. Have them build mounting plates, so you can manuver them from beneath. 18 footers are the way to go. I just bought a 1973 233 center console 2 weeks ago, I'm in the process of stripping it down to the stringers, it will be a complete rebuild with a notched transom. I started taking up the deck today, once I have some photo's I will post them. Because of work I am limited to the weekends to work on it and because of wife and daughter I am limited to 1 day a week of working on it. So I will wait until I have made some real progress before I start my own thread.
Okay a couple of update pics, I am actually further along, I just need to take more pics.
Engine box
Gas shut-off valves, a bit much but I have 5 tanks. I also added a place were I can syphone gas out or run treated gas through the engines without having to treat all of the gas.
Me looking stupid
Battery box
This was a dry fit the floor has since been fiberglassed and hopefully I will get some painting done in the next 2 weeks. Just a little more sanding. I hate sanding.
Okay I know it has been awhile but I did get started painting the hull. It is a dark blue color. Pictues are not great because of the glare the flash created, then camera battery died. You can tell it is a diy job but I am happy with the way it is turning out. This is the second coat. I will have to sand and add the 3rd coat hopefully this weekend.
What kind of paint are you using? Roll and tip I presume?
Yep, I am using the interlux perfection, using a roll and tip method. It has its good points. Interlux is a sister company to awlgrip. The paint brush is the most crucial piece in the method.
I did a 233 back in 1995. It is a labor of love to be sure. i now have the desire to find another one and redo her.
Mine had a 165 hp volvo diesel with a duoprop drive. 27kts wide open.7.5gph
Have found a few out there but everyone wants top dollar for them.
Keep up the great work Dolphin. Have enjoyed the thread

Mainly because it is easier. I am not a pro. I have done a few paint jobs with spray guns in the past (not on boats), and in my opinion without a booth it is a mess. If done in a shop paint particals will be in the air and set back down over night causing a rough finish (will also settle down on everything you have in the shop). If done outside more chance of bugs and dust from the wind getting in the paint.
Also it saves time not having to tape everything. The pictures shown are with the boat still taped up. A little tape on the rub rails, trim tabs, outdrives, bow eye and that is it. I did not tape the bottom because it will be painted over. I can control the paint a lot better with the brush.
I painted a truck with a gun once and did not tape the top completely. I left about a 2 x 2 square untaped and the next day when I removed everything there was paint on that one spot. Wasn't a big deal but helps you to learn. If using a gun then a booth is really nice and the way to go.
I thing the spray gun does a better job, but for the money and easiness the roll and tip is hard to beat.
It is like the difference in building a boat vs buying one that is already built, different people have different opinions . By the way, your boat is coming along nicely, keep it up.
The roll an tip method must take a little getting used to. I tried it on the first coat of my Blackfin, and had to sand it back off then spray it. Yours looks much better than my first roll and tip attempt.

The type of brush used and the amount of thinner used are very crucial. Also the first coat will look a little rough most of the time. The second coat as shown here comes out much better. Also 2 people working is a good idea. To give you an idea of the difference between coats take a look at the pics below. Notice that in the first coat you can see all of the little lines from the brush, the second coat minus the glare and slight orange peel, the paint lays much better and smoother.
