Can you just remove them and fill in the holes for the docking lights? Seems like an ongoing maintenance issue for something that is needed on cars, not boats. Your probably better off with a remote or handheld spotlight anyway if you need one.

I think it would probably be better without them, I have used them for docking which is all they are good for. Jenny like the look of the docking light so they will probably stay. I seriously doubt they will see much use though. I also keep the handheld spotlight in the boat.
I saw this post and it made me feel nostalgic. This is one of the best boats I ever had. It is a 24' version of the original. I watched it being built in the old plant imn Miami at 144th and Biscayne Blvd. It was the last 242 built in Miami before they sent every thing to Indiana. I was told by the line foreman that mine was the last "flat glass" 24 built by Formula..June 1986.
Just thought I would share...I have more pics some where.

Excelent thread, I love seeing old boats come back to life. For some reason I just appreciate an older restored boat more than a brand new custom built big buck rig. Keep the pictures and progress coming.
Great thread. I good friend of my parents had one in Mobile and the local TV news station used it to take video of running across the bay. They showed that video footage at the begining of every news show for years. The only observation I have that you are doing wrong is there is no ring on that girl's finger! Grinding, glassing and posing for pics and just graduated with an MBA? I'd tie that one down quick!

Keep up the good work and pics!
Starting to sound like her. But true, I don't know many girls with an MBA that would be there during this kind of work. However a ring will probably bring an end to that, like it does with so many other things.

That doesn't have to be!

LOL...I had my GF helping me rebuild an old SeaCraft while she was in school getting her MBA. She is now my pregnant wife earning a nice living.
Took the lights out. These things where a pain to takes out. We were thinking of replacing them with the smaller stainless ones, but the holes are already there for the big ones. They are just pricey. Any opinions on the docking lights would be appreciated.
.
Just a thought. Last time I replaced The stern light on my SeaCraft, the new Light Base was much smaller than the older one. I was on a Budget so the smaller one was going in no matter what.
The solution for me was to get some starboard and cover the holes. I beveled the edges and caulked it well before screwing it over the old hole. The end look was good and looked like it belonged there. In the 10 years I owned the boat i never did replace it. Maybe you could do the same here and save a few bucks for now. you could even put a thin layer on the outside for looks and back it to a thicker piece in the inside for strength.
Once it was screwed together it would be tough as heck and you could mount new lighs into it.

That hull is spookey familiar. We had a 24' Apollo that looked like that hull in every aspect. Apollo apparently sold the mold to Albie for their 24'. Is there any connection at all?

Shag,
I am sure there are many guys on here that can tell you all the hulls that copied the formula. The albemarle is definelty one. Here is a link to a post on the formula forum with a list of hulls that are copied from the 233.

Started sanding and it has been slow going. I also installed the helm but haven't fiberglassed it in yet. Here are a few pics of the progress and Jenny removing the old stickers from the side.
I might have missed this, but is that paint you are sanding off? Did it gum up the paper pretty good? I sanded the hull sides of an old Bertram 20 that was painted some 20 years ago. Paper gummed up something awful...

Ian.
Ian,
In my opinion cheaper sandpaper gums up quicker, and possibly different paints. I have not had any of it gumming up on me. It has been a pretty smooth process, just time consuming.

A combination of 80 and 120. I think the boat has been painted more than once, or either they put a lot of coats on it. The test spot I did on the topside didn't seem as thick.
