Nice dolphin,
I am in the process of rebuilding a 75' with 2 165 inlines.
your model looks different than alot of the 233's ive seen.
it looks like your windsheild is a foot or so further back than mine. I dont have the "fabulous fisherman" and my deck mesures roughly 11 ft fron the bulkhead to the transom. my freind has a 67' sport fisherman with a 13 ft deck.
I know there was an interceptor model built that had the windsheild way back (further than yours) and a serious stringer system. how long is your deck?
do you go to www.formulaboatsforum.com at all? not much activity there.
Yeah they are different. If you look on the first page you can see some of the original advertising. Mine is the sport convertible model. I also have the 67 fisherman which will be my next project. This one was just an easier fix. The merc 170's are in really good shape and fresh water cooled. If they go bad I will add a bracket and put outboards. Hopefully that will be a ways off. The bad things about the engines I have and the inline six like you have is that they are no longer made. The only engines that you can buy new to fit would be the 3.0 which won't push near as fast or strong. Oh yes the sometime during the 70's they changed the top mold of the boat, and the interceptor was designed later than my model. I also go to the formula forum but not much goes on there, since most post on this site as well I just post here.

Nice looking formula. Do you plan on keeping it red?

Damn Richard.

I started reading this thread and got to the pictures and realized we know each other.

We might have rabbit hunted together once or five hundred times about 12 or so years ago.

Your cousin and I are good friends....got a guess yet??

Nice looking project boat. Glad to see you're doing well.

Dolphin,,I know the 470/170/185 all to well, actually I like the 470 and would not mind havind a couple. (btw they are all FWC) it is based on 1/2 of a 460 ford engine, same stroke, bore and cyl. head. It was a replacement for my 165 when gm started making the heads and manifolds one peice.
I have 3 running engines and 2 spare cores and plan on running them for a while. I dont know if I am gonna paint her, kinda like the red, gotta get her together first.
so Albemarle must have gotten your style topside mold then huh.

I knew they were all FWC, but I didn't know they were based on halcf the 460. Nice to know though. My dislikes are the water pump and charging system. When my stator goes out I am going to put altenators on them. I like the red hulls to. My girlfriend like the blue so guess what color mine will be. But its cool I like for her to have interested in it.

Cornbread,

Last I heard you were living in columbia about two blocks from where I work. Still there? Are you into fishing now? Boy I have a lot of memories back then. Some crazy memories actually, but it was all fun.

yep, I was looking for 1 ford 460 edelbrock performer head for the one i had in my last boat but never got to it. the block is aluminum and the head is iron so you could loose some signifigant weight by going with aluminum heads. the only difference is the water hose fitting on the front of the head, a machine shop could cut and press one in though. also by going aluminum you dont have to worry about the head gasket issue they have as much.
The alternator kits are the way to go, bypass the cooling to the voltage regulator as well when you switch over , they can restrict raw water flow.

yeah about the fresh water pump I think they make an upgraded cam thrust washer but i am not sure.

Here's a very special 233 we restored. This was Don Aronows original 233 named "The Cigarette" #16. It was a great pleasure and honor to have my name on this boat. It was featured in Poker Runs America and was the Grand Marshall for the Sarasota Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix 2006. Iput a second link below with the Poker Runs America Article.

Boathaus - many thanks for posting up your involvment and the link to the pics and article. It's a fascinating project/story for those of us that have an interest in the Formula 233. The 233 seems over-shadowed by the Bertram 31 in a historical context, but I doubt there are many hulls that have been duplicated or modified under different brands quite as much as the 233.

Boathaus,

Like kitebuz said. Thanks. I have actually seen the pics of that boat in the old pics. It is the only one that I have seen other than mine with the long cabin, so it caught my attention. It is nice to know that it was restored. With the link you provided I can see that it also has the wider door entering into the cabin. Gives less room for the gauges, throttle, and wheel with a twin set up. I have been trying to figure out how I am going to set mine up. Thanks again for the post.

dolphin233, I have a 233 with the long cabin just like yours (mines a 1969). It has twin OMC 4cyl inline I/O's w/ stringer 400 outdrives. My plan is to bracket it and put outboards on it. I will be starting on it in a few weeks. I'll post some pics when I start.

I saw a 23 Ocean Master on a salvage site. I think it was a 1993 or so. When I looked @ the pics i had to laugh, it was a 233 with a lil added to the shear line fwd of center. No doubt that is a great hull. By the way... The one we restored raced in the Don Aronow Memorial HORBA Race from miami to bimini and back. Our boat made it in 2 hours.. It was really flat se conditions, but I have made the run from Port Everglades to Cat Cay and Bimini more than I can count and have never made it in an hour one way. I have run a 25 Contender, 35 Donzi ZF, Mako 25 and many others and still took more than 1.5 hours.. Just goes to prove the hull on a legendary 23 footer!!

Just saw that piece on the Aranow 233. Was a 1964 though not 67. Boat is beautiful as I have seen it firsthand. Boathaus has turned out some quality work over the years.

Oscarmacd,
Thanks for the kind words. I did some inquiries and I believe it's a 1963. Either way, the boat is awsome. It's sceduled to come in for some upgrades soon

Okay finally got the cabin top in good shape. Took a while and it is really hard working overhead with resin. It is now solid. Before we started it could hardly support any weight, and now it will hold me without any problems. These pics were from the last piece being laminated in, pretty stupid hats, but are great for keeping resin out of the hair.

Also started working on a new helm. Here it is in rough form.

Also the piece behind the helm was rotted out so we tore it out and made a new piece for it.

Old Piece

New piece

Took out the piece of the floor that had been removed. Originally there was two tanks on each side of the middle one. Someone had cut the floor removed them and put a piece of treated plyboard over the cut out. I only removed the treated part and I plan on fiberglassing a new board in its place. Pretty dirty form years of sitting.

Took the lights out. These things where a pain to takes out. We were thinking of replacing them with the smaller stainless ones, but the holes are already there for the big ones. They are just pricey. Any opinions on the docking lights would be appreciated.

Next we will probably start sanding and start recoring the engine box. I am thinking I should paint the top before I drill the holes for the rod holders, outriggers, cleats, and gasfills. I am just thinking it will be a lot of trouble to install everything and then remove it for painting.
