pug what does east ship look like now?
BK we used to anchor up surfside opposite the pine trees, and even on weekends pretty much had the place to ourselves...
i havent been there in a couple of years
Re: Ship Island, Mississippi - Black Sand and Black Skimmers
The main section of east ship island, the part with the trees, still looks the same. The long sand spit that went out into camille cut was wiped out by Katrina. Should still be a good spot to camp and get some solitude. You can see it really good on google earth.

whats all the litle red flags for?
Those mark the off limits boundary. Inside there, the skimmers and least terns are nesting. Park Service doesn't want people trampling through there. They do it anyway. Go figure.
Re: Ship Island, Mississippi - Black Sand and Black Skimmers
Do you hang out on the south or north side of the island? I was out there Saturday on the very east end of West Ship near Camille Cut. It was fantastic, as usual. I had to laugh at your recent post describing it being our little slice of the Caribbean or something like that. I just told my niece visiting from Birmingham that if I had blindfolded her and dropped her on Ship Island, she'd think she was in the Bahamas. I've never actually been there and I'm sure the water is clearer but, oh well. I love it out there. I'm really enjoying your pictures. Do you live in Long Beach? I'm from the Pass, obviously.

I'm glad you're enjoying the pics, that is the only reason I do it. Keep checking, no doubt we'll be out this weekend and i'll post a bunch more, hopefully some more from Cat Island this time. On the fourth, the water was as clear as i've ever seen it, except for all that floating algae. I think we have one of the best kept secrets in the whole country when it comes to boating.......barrier islands, great fishing, relatively uncrowded spots, year round protected waters..........can't beat it.
As for ship island, my favorite spot is the south side on the east end, near the cut. The water is clearest there I think, but it has to be pretty calm to anchor. I also like the other tip, by the pass, though it can get crowded there. Goose point at cat island is another nice spot. Maybe i'll see you out there one day. I have a yellow sea hunt walkaround. I live about 15 miles north of pass christian, in the boonies.

Pug,
It's too sad to even look at. The federal government needs to take a serious look at protecting all these barrier islands, including Chandeleur, Breton, and Grand Isle. They are not getting enough time to regenerate before getting pounded again and they serve as our first line of defense against hurricanes. Not that they would have done any thing to slow Katrina's ridiculously high surge. Anyway, if more care is not taken with them, they won't be around for our kids to enjoy. I was out at Isle au Pitre the other day. It will be gone in a few years, never to return. When I was a kid, there were several keys we fished on that were either out of the water or just below the surface. Now they have 4 to 9 feet of water over them. Our coastline is disappearing and no one seems to take it too seriously. I guess it's hard to convince a politician from Nebraska to appropriate billions of dollars for reclamation projects on the Gulf of Mexico, but it's a desperate situation that someone needs to address. Do you think Haley Barbour would allocate some of that casino money for saving our islands? I doubt it.
We'll be at Ship Island tomorrow. Probably closer to the fort this time. My preteen daughter is at the age where she wants to wander around and that's where she and her buddies like to head. When we're down by Camille Cut, my wife worries about her being so far away. We'll be in my yellow Pursuit Walkaround if you're in the area.
Re: Ship Island, Mississippi - Black Sand and Black Skimmers
I agree with passchristian, I would like to see the barrier islands restoried. I think it should be at the top of the list.
we need to give some back every year. They pump sand back on the beach every few years. Why don't they do this
on the islands? I see where some people have invented devices you put along the coast to help pasive build up of sand.
Why can't we get some of ower tax money back to spend on something that makes since. sorry about the rant, but i have a hard
time letting this go
Re: Ship Island, Mississippi - Black Sand and Black Skimmers
Right. More like they're going to need it to bail out GM, Countrywide, Citicorp, or any of the other huge companies having a tough time weathering this economy.
Re: Ship Island, Mississippi - Black Sand and Black Skimmers
That black sand is river deposit. The islands in Terrebonne bay (We call them "Last Island" where I'm from) all have the same sand. They are actually quite beautiful islands. And yes, action needs to be taken to preserve them. Great pics.
Re: Ship Island, Mississippi - Black Sand and Black Skimmers
I just joined the board and enjoy the pics/stories about Ship Island. Used to fish on it so many years ago I won't bore you with it. But, if any of your outings to the island get you over and around EAST Ship, I'd sure get a kick ouyt of any pics you could post of what's left of the island. The submerged western portion of East Ship once held buildings (Old quarantine station), a long pier, cat walks, etc. Camille put an end to that, but some of ruins remained a few years after Camille, even an active artesion well head. I have those pictures... Successive storms have pretty-well put all of that so far underwater out into Camille Cut and away from the trees that some folks never knew about it. If anybody runs over any very old pictures of the section of East Ship that didn't get ruined by Katrina, I'd sure like to see them, and if nothing else, put together a little history of the pre-storm glory days of that part of the island. The fishing used to be so superb... Catching specks in the dawn hours at the "stumps" near the trees to nailing small lemonfish on the long pier that ran over the shallows northward from there... There used to be a rock pile just to the north of the now-submerged section that marked the end of the shallow flats. I belive that that small pile of rocks is still visible on Google's sat pics, especially if you know where to look. Old charts mark the submerged rocks and a likeness to them can be spotted by the sat pic. Anyway, any and all pictures your guys can take of East Ship would be a joy to view. Thanx!

I haven't spent much time at East Ship, but did go a few weeks ago and snapped a few shots. It is a cool island, but there is not much left to it, the sandbars on the ends are wiped out. Check them out here:
