Default 1977 Camaro project car

Well,
Let the project begin. Ripped the interior out already and gave it a good tune up. Still need to check the brakes and all the other safety related items before I put it on the street. I'm going to start the body/interior work next week. Then new engine/tranny and finally paint some time later on. Here are some pictures of it on blocks.

Front panels are solid

Rear panels have the traditional rust. I will cut and weld metal.

The car is actually pretty solid and in pretty good shape all things considered...

Enjoy the restoration my friend - nothing better than building your own, just the way you like it. Small block with a 2 barrel - time for a crate motor!

I was going to ask "What is the best engine" for this car? I was thinking a beefed up 350. My mechinic said put in a 454. Thats just too big (I think) Any suggestions???

Don't need the big block, a souped up 350 will work wonders.

If you go the 454 route, you are getting all kinds of modifications, to consider:

What kind of rear end? 12 Bolt Posi? You will need traction with the unibody frame if you are going to spin 400 HP.

If this is a stock Camaro, the breaks are not adequate.

Turbo 400 at least for the transmission.

Updated suspension to handle the motor- torque etc.

Cool Project just need to make sure it can stop and the drivetrain is adequate.

Me, I'd go with a 4 bolt main 350 bloc, good luck.

Your mechanic sorry is a moron 1 a 454 is to heavy for the suspension in that car. 2 it would require to much modification to the engine compartment to fit, The ideal engine is a 350. If it were me I would look into getting a Summit 350 zz4 with 385hp backed with a muncie close ratio 4speed rock crusher, or if you want automatic and depending on how your gonna drive it if your gonna use it to street race a Turbo 350 tranny with a shift kit if its gonna be a cruiser with an occasional race I would go with the Turbo 700r and the ideal rear end for that car is a 3:55 posi will give you good performance and driveability

Does this sound like a good deal???

"started with a 350 block, had bottom end cut out for clearance. eagle alloys forged rotating assembly, flat top pistons, brand new heads the last four of the serial is 442 i believe. edelbrock valve springs to match cam. all cut and assembly was done at rpm racing in crystal river. motor comes as a long block needs valve covers, oil pan, oil pump, timing chain cover, lifters set, and intake. i am willing to let it go for $1500, i have over 3 invested."

Smitty, I don't know about that motor. I would stay away from it or get someone who know if its a good setup(cam compression) for a street car. Have someone look it over.
I guess I am the only one who likes the big block idea.

I had the same car when I was in high school, blew the 350 up and replaced it with a 400 small block, bored 30 over if I remember correctly, holley 4 barrel carb, dual point dist. headers, and enough chrome to blind you when you opened the hood. muncie close ratio 4 speed rock crusher, 12 bolt posi rear. fastest car I have ever owned and I have had lots. car was pretty light and would fishtail very easy if I was not careful, took it up to 140mph once, (things you do when you are 20) ah the good old days. good luck

I've got a 72 Camaro with a stroked 383, 420 hp, 700r4 with 373 gears that I just finished building. Protour style. Thing rips. The stroker motors make a ton of torque. Big block will work for sure, change out your coil springs in the frontand a few other things. Are you building it to drive, show, go to the drag strip?

Fun street cars have lots of torque. Unless you want to give Z06's and exotic imports a run on the highways at high speed (not smart in a chassis like the 77 camaro)...stick with a torque producing engine. High gearing also. Welded in subframe connectors will be needed too.

This will be a weekend driver only. No interest in shows or drag strip.
