I would buy a LS1 or LS2 take out from a late model Camaro with a T56, pretty easy transplant, they make huge power with a couple add ons and you cannot beat having FI or the light weight of an aluminum block, check out www.ls1tech.com there is a ton of info on the site about how to do it.

I've got a 72 Camaro with a stroked 383, 420 hp, 700r4 with 373 gears that I just finished building. Protour style. Thing rips. The stroker motors make a ton of torque. Big block will work for sure, change out your coil springs in the frontand a few other things. Are you building it to drive, show, go to the drag strip?
This will be a weekend driver only. No interest in shows or drag strip.

Then go with either a 3.55 or 3.73 rear end anything higher will kill the motor on the streets or highway the ZZ4 350 from summit is perfect for that car has aluminum fast burn heads 385hp and 385ftlbs of torque at 4000 rpms its power to weight ration is a little better than the stroker because of the heads

Stick the money into the body and put a nice exhaust system on it. I wouldn't dump all that $ into power you just can't use.

I am going to do the body first as well as a nice set of tires. I want to get it all primered before before putting a motor in which will take a while. The monies needed add up quick!

I'd go with Afishinado - make it look great, and then put some money into a stroked motor with an aggressive cam - maybe not the best for high end HP, but a good looking ride with a lumpy cam is all you need to make a great weekend driver...

Don't think you would like a big block in that car. Too nose heavy even with an updated/high performance suspension. A small block either stroked or with a power adder like a Vortech supercharger kit will make all the power you can keep to the ground.
I have my own "restomod" I'm working on.....a '66 Mustang Fastback. Same thing goes for that car as far as a big block. Too heavy with way too muchwork to fit, Pinto steering rack , cutting and removing existing shock towers etc. I'm building the Stang with a lowered stance for the look along with the 8k suspension I've already done. I am in the process of mini-tubbing the rear since I now have an RRS 3-link rear setup with coilovers at all four corners...........no more leaf springs! This thing drives and handles like a slot car!
Once the tubs are done she gets painted then might consider a stroked small block or a supercharger. We'll see.

I built a '86 Thunderbird back in '99 which I installed a 331 stroker with the Vortech supercharger and 10 pounds of boost, a custom grind Lunati cam, 63# injectors, along with a huge list of performance engine and suspension/transmission parts. On a rear wheel dyno the T-Bird put 621h.p. to the rear wheels! Talk about bad ass! Wasn't a car on the road that could hang with this stock looking car. What a blast to drive. I'm gonna do my best to stay away from too many engine mods as horsepower is very expensive. For my money, a supercharger is the best "bang for the buck" power adder. Talk about torque??? Car can be seen on a T-Bird website "Fox Thundercats" when it had the first 306c.i. motor/blower combo. Scroll down to Bubba Collins Elan 5.0(if your interested of course)

Have fun and have patience so you do it right and exactly like you want it.

make sure the seats are shag, the wing needs to be unpainted plywood and all four tires should be different brands. Oh, and weld the doors shut. See if u can find a delta 88 1980 351 V8 and put a quick shift transmission on it and u will need tires every two weeks.

Hope u like the smell of rubber in the morning....! :-}

Me, TOO!

I'm guessin' '52,'53' or '54 - a non-V-8 year. Originals were probably the ole' reliable "235" in-line 6-banger.

BUT, from the looks of those rear tires, I'd say there's SOMETHIN' that warrants dual exhausts!

OPEN THAT HOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to ask "What is the best engine" for this car? I was thinking a beefed up 350. My mechinic said put in a 454. Thats just too big (I think) Any suggestions???
I would take a 350 small block and stroke it out to a 383 roller motor. For the rear end I would go with a ford 9inch posi traction. Big blocks can get expensive real fast.

Smitty

Don't listen to anyone who tells you that a big block doesn't work in these cars the ss models had 396 in them and I have hadmy z28 since high school and always had bigblocks in 2nd gen fbodies. I have been restoring mine to a street strip car for the last 4 years and I amalmost done with it. If you have any questions I have real world answers for you on 2nd gen camaros. I fit huge tires under stock suspension camaros with out rubbing and have been doing so for my freinds for the last couple of years. Here are some pix and specs of what the car started as and is up to now. Either way you go BBC or SBC they mount up in the same location and are easy to set up. Their are so many after market parts that work for these cars.If you got any questions my email is inthepocket@gmail.com. You can also go to Nastyz28dot com their is a wealth of info on 2nd gen fbodies. Good luck with your project.

Here is a video of one of my buddies car that has a big block in it and this is the way the take off. For the person who said they are front heavy with a BBC is talkin out of their Arse.

WoW! You just gave me a woody!

I think I'm going with a 396. I found a local guy and went to his house and he's a "OLD SCHOOL" guy who had about 6 race cars and about 6 street hot rods all over his yard. He has been building and racing his entire life and is now retired but still builds engines as a hobby. I've never met a guy that takes that much pride in his work!!! I have a choice of this motor he just finishd or he can build me something simular with a 350. I think i'm going with the 396 after looking at yours. Here is the info on the 396

"Big block Checy 396 / 40 over block was bored and honed using deck plate hot tanked with new cam bearings freeze plugs. (Crank turned) All new rod and main bearings hyperutectic pistons moly rings, new oil pump, new timing chain set, new cam and lifters. Three angle valve job, heads resurfaced, new valve springs. Full roller rockers, not just the cheap roller tip style. Chrome valve covers, aluminum intake. Brand new 750 cfm holly carb. 14 inch chrome air cleaner and new plug wires"

He's giving me such a good deal that he's basically going to buid the car for me. Here are some more things he's going to do.

1. Swap the Transmission. He's putting the one built for the 396

2. Swap out the rear end

3. 3 1/2 stainless dual exhaust (NO catalytic converter!!! Gotta love Florida)

4. Upgrade all the suspension

5. He will also clean and paint the Engine compartment when he has the engine out.

This guy knows how to build cars so I might as well let an expert do it!

inthepocket - That is one sweet car!Do you have any pictures of the hood after you painted it? I have the same hood and I would like to see what it looks like. I'm sending you an IM as well.
