Been a while since I posted pictures of a new Tolman Skiff. I reckon I'm just a busy fellow. Anywho, here's a beauty that was recently finished. This is Jerry Johnson's Tolman Skiff Jumbo. Took him 3 years and now he's got a boat that he's built with his own two hands.
The idea behind building a Tolman Skiff is that you start out with a basic hull of either of four models, and then customize it as you see fit. Folks come up with some pretty good ideas and very unique Skiffs.
A Tolman Skiff is built from plywood, epoxy and fiberglass. It uses the stitch and glue method of building, and utilizes very few frame members. Although a Tolman is very light compared to factory built equivalent size boats, it's boat with a proven ocean going history. It's strong and durable. With it's Dory heritage with it's sweeping sheer and reserve buoyancy a Tolman Skiff rises up in a big swell and handles a following sea with elegance. And because it is a modified-v design it jumps up on plane with little power and is economical to run.
I evangelize the Tolman Skiff because I love the way the boat looks and it was a total hoot to build my own Skiff, and it's pretty amazing to find myself 22 miles off shore fishing in it. I have to pinch myself every time I take it out. If I can build a Tolman Skiff then most anyone can do the same. Folks all over the world have built or are building their own Tolman Skiff. You can too!
Life is mighty good.
