Default Solomons Island Maryland

Read an article about Solomons Island in the January edition of the Boat/U.S. magazine and I had to check it out during the winter lay up. Drove up by car but I will be back via boat this summer. Very nice area, wouldn't mind living there when I retire.

I am 5th generation born on Solomon's Island. I lived there until I was out of High School. When we sold our house on the Island in the mid 80's, we had to go buy a lock to put on the door to give the people who bought the house a key.

hehe...

My Family OWNED the Tiki Bar......

The Motel that it is connected to, and the restaurant across the parking lot.

When I was like 7 or 8 years old, we were sitting around with John and Kathy who run the bar and we were making the recipe for the Mai Tai's and other house drinks...I was a taste tester.

4th pic from the top, That was a Grandpa's house/marina. I spent ALOT of time there growing up.

My buddy has a boat out of solomons. we fish all the MSSA rock fish tourneys out of the marina behind the Holiday Inn. I think its called Hospitality Marina. Good spot. We have done quite well fishing those tourneys and I've also done quite well supporting Somethin-Fishey's family's business at the Tiki Bar.

Beautiful place, nice restaurants, some overpriced yuppy lunch joints though. Did not notice a lot of real housing on the island itself (at least from bridge to Tiki Bar), just homes converted to shops and restaurants (touristy but not as bad as many waterfront towns). Saw one large house that a few years ago was listing at over $1M, so unless you are moving from a high cost of living area (DC, Annapolis, etc.) it will seem very expensive to buy there.

Still, if you have the money and a boat big enough to enjoy the river and the bay, it would be a wonderful place to live, retire, or work from home and less than an hour away from Mall type shopping if you needed it (maybe even closer depending on how much the Route 5 corridor has built up from La Plata south).

I've had my boat there for the last five years. Great place.

Cool place to boat to (a short run for me from the eastern side, and yes, the tiki bar has caused me to spend the nite on board!) but, boy, do I hate driving there!
