I am sure everyone has heard about our drought here in GA. Atlanta supposedly only has a couple of months left of drinking water.
I drove by both of Atlanta's large reservoirs this week.
(top pic) Lake Lanier is down 18 feet, almost to a historic low. It is crazy that someone would leave there Bayliners just sitting out there! LOL (sorry Bayliner owner, I just had to say it)
(bottom pic) Lake Allatoona is lower. The Little River Marina is a year-around marina with 20+ feet under the docks. All the boats have been removed and the closest navigable water is 1/2 mile away!
Now we HAVE to go to the coast to actually use our boats!
Just thought I would put the drought in the Southeast that you hear and read about in perspective.
Yes, lets see keep the bay and estuary from dying or keep the north georgia lawns watered and bmw's clean Atlanta should have thought about water before all of the expanding and building went on. I know the good people in Tennessee will sell water to you all from the river, just get out your wallets. Remember if your gonna be stupid.......ya gotta be tough. The Hun

Yeah, just ask those smart folks living in south f-l-a what the Tallahassee crowd did for 'em! First they destroy the everglades, now it's the big lake, and who knows what's next. Time to close the Seminole dam (or have a couple of more football games), Florida is startin to get uppity again ...
I heard on the news last night the Corp is going to slow down the release of water......that sounded great until they said the decrease would be a whopping 5%.
Wow.........and I though ourLake Michigan's water level was down(7ft since 1986 at the high point). Has this been a steady decline for the GaAtl area or did this happen in just one year's time?

Looks like lots of NC. No sympathy for the cities that took forever to enact strong water conservation rules early on, its not like any weather forecasts were calling for a wet fall or winter. Should have banned all outdoor water use 6 months ago, and (at least for Raliegh, but probably a lot of these bigger SE cities), significantly reduced the rate of new developments until they had the resources to support them (not just water either).
Anyway, will be an interesting winter and spring if no major changes happen in the weather. And yes, I am p.o.'d that most of my ramps are shut down due to low water, f* the HOA's and their green lawns.

Andy,
The lakes were near full pool at the end of spring this year. The drought has been severe and The Corp of Engineers/FEDS water policy have combined to be a real problem.

ATL has been under severe watering restrictions for months (only on Sat until 10am)......a total ban for at least 2 months. It doesn't matter since the Corp keeps releasing billions of gallons a day for downstream clams.....ouch.
Afraid its going to get worse before its going to get better....
Unfortunately, there will be economic fallout, as well. Large nursery/plant chain (22 stores) filed for Bankruptcy this week...if you can't plant and water them, then no one is going to buy them either.
I wonder how long before some of our longtime (and short time) local dealers throw in the towel....and I wonder what the ATL Boat Show will look like this year...should be interesting.
In northeast georgia we had an opportunity to help provide water to the rest of the state by building a dam on the oconee river just west of athens, instead
they built a huge dam on one of the feeder creeks (bear creek) that carried very little reserve capacity (compared to the dam size because of flat terrain of the
lake bed). It's about empty. The tree huggers and politicians could have built a much smaller dam the would have carried a hundred times more reserve capacity for water.
I know that stretch of the oconee river well, and if they would have done it right, they would have only had to buy a couple of homes and some farm land. The dam could have also generated electricity due to the height of the dam.
One other thing I think some of you guys need to check on. If I'm not mistaken, the majority of ATLs water comes from pumping stations below the lake lanier dam. It's the northern subs like north fulton, gwinnett, and hall that get their water directly from the lake. Pumping stations on the hooch provide the city's water. Not absolutely sure, but I think so.
The concern for those in the city of atlanta should be that there is enough water in lanier to continue release downstream. Don't know if the system of Atlanta and the pump station from the lake itself are connected, but I don't think they are.
This will get ugly when it gets interstate. ATL is looking to take from the Savannah River basin and put it back into the Chatahochi(or however the hell you spell it). Thats great exept my water comes from the Sav River, so now what?
