ah man...you give me flashbacks!!!

those are yard patrol (yp) craft -- for midshipman, the yp stands for "you're pukin'". they're wooden hulls, shallow draft, based on mine sweeper hulls and they bob and roll like you can't believe.

i was on a summer training cruise in 1990 and our squadron of 4 yp's ran from philly to norfolk in 6-8 ft seas and fog so thick that we couldn't see the running lights just 100 yards ahead. we putted along at about 8 knots and by the time we got to norfolk, the exterior bulkheads off the bridge were covered with puke. out of a crew of 24 (there were a couple of enlisted crew with 2 officers and the rest midshipmen), only one petty officer and ME were not sick!

good times!

Those last 2 pics are of a RO-RO ship, stands for roll on roll off. The stern door is really a ramp that extends out onto the terminal and the side door also extends down and out onto the terminal. Used as a vehicle carrier usually, but also handles special cargo that is overheight/width. Here's a picture of the stern ramp lowering and extending outward
