I accomplished something I assumed I could never do today-- I completed my first(and maybe last) full marathon. All 26.2 miles of it. Not thrilled with my time, but really happy to have finished to say the least.
The race was the New Orleans Mardi Gras Marathon, and covered many areas of the city, which, by the way, looks a TON better than TV would have you believe.
I did really well until mile 16-- I started to get chills on an 80 degree day after nearly 3 hours of running, so I knew I was getting dehydrated. Despite my best efforts I got my first "charlie horse" at mile 18 and fought them the last 8 miles. If you've ever had them you'd wonder how could you possibly stand, much less run? Well, it sucked, but I wasn't going to be denied. So the d@mned cramps cost me 30-40 minutes in the last 8 miles, having to stretch every 1/2 mile or maybe more. you could actually see the knots on my thighs! Anyway, I finished strong.
Finished first 1/2 at 2 hrs 10 min. -----5 hrs 11 min total time
Couldn't have done it without the support of my cheering section--wife and daughter, mom and dad, sister, and several cousins. Thanks Nicole for giving me so much time to train--you're great!
Feeling good at mile 17
rehydrating at 20---about to die
training partner John Theriot closing in on me--I was 15 min. ahead of him at one point
this old SOB beat me
my cheerleaders--notice wife(the one in the sunglasses) and daughter how cute
down the stretch
ran my first full 26.2 thon (and last) in 94 - takes a lot of time and prep to do it..haulin your a$$ outta bed on 50 degree morning for a 14 mile run is a PIA....think I trained over 6 months to do it as it was in my home town (Columbus, O)
Don't think I'll ever do it, would have liked to when I was a younger 'un. Guess if God wanted us to run 20 plus miles he wouldn't have let us invent cars!
Nice work. I used to run competitively myself yet never ran a marathon. I envy you. While running, I mostly raced 5k-10 miles for a powerbar club and then a Reebok club after my collegiate career. Though I hadnt raced in about 5 years, my running ended a year and a half ago with an IT band injury that every doctor in the area cannot completely figure out. I have been to Hopkins and several other big name places with no concrete answers. I guess the years of 70-100 miles a week caught up to me. Like I said, congrats! I envy you!
You've got a big one on me. I'm still very impressed... not to mention proud of you as well. Good job! I don't think I could do it. I know I'd never get the training done by myself anyhow. Next time you decide to do one of these, maybe I'll entertain the idea of trying. But the way my body has been acting lately, I really don't think I could do it. My legs have been cramping up solid at about 3000 yds in my swimming workouts. Thats only 45 minutes into what I used to do for a warm-up in my former life.
congratulations on your accomplishment. i ran the DC marine corps in 2001 so I understand the training required and what it is like to do. It is natural to be disappointed in your time but the only important thing is that you finished, which is especially impressive since it was a struggle. way to go and well done on your cheering section- you have a lot to be proud of!

notice the knee brace?--IT band also, but it never botheres at ALL with the brace
Way to go and sucking it up through the pain. Used to run a lot of races in N.O., still run, but not as many races. Still have not run a marathon, but you did what my goal would be for the first one and that is to finish. Would like to do at least one marathon, but don't like the pains I feel in my joints after ten miles and that seems like my body is telling me that is it's limit.

Nice job! You've proven the old adage, a marathon doesn't start until mile 18.
I've run the Marine Corp Marathon twice and trained for it four times. Of the two marathons I missed, the first one I broke my foot four weeks before the race and the next time I just slacked too much in the training and knew I had no shot.
The feeling coming through that finish line is indescribable, it's a combination of euphoria and an urge to puke!
Congrats on finishing , few people in the world are able to accomplish such a feat.

Nice job! I ran one myself back in 2001...for the Team in Training Luekemia society...race was in San Diego. Like you, I paid a price at mile 20 (had not trained past 18 due to back issues) but I finished. My wife and I did it together so it was pretty cool. Never again for me...too much pounding but a great accomplishment.
I did a 1/2 marathon in Moab,Utah, ostensibly as a warm up for the full monty. I lost interest as soon as I finished the 13.1.
Now with kids, work, and fishing I do not have the time to train. It takes a whole lot of commitment, Good job in finishing, do you plan to run another one?
