I remember when I was a kid and the bay off Massapequa froze so thick that people were driving cars across it.

My Dad was a clammer at the time. He would walk out, cut open a big hole in the ice and work it putting the clams in a bucket full of water so they would not freeze. Did not catch the quantity, but the price was high.

I was big time into hockey at the time so we skated from Amityville all the way to the State Channel one day. The trip south was nice with the wind at our back, the skate home was awful. I still remember how cold we were!

Cool thing was taking a slap shot to see if anyone could shoot a puck a mile! LOL

Beautiful pics, brings back some great memories.
Thanks for sharing!

Squid, I grew up in Bellport and remember back in the 70's the bay was frozen solid for weeks. We had cars, clammers, ice boats and even fires on the ice. I even rode my bike over to the ocean. One day me and my friends took a long walk over to the beach as the temp steadily rose. On the way back we were slogging through 4 or 5 inches of slush. The cops were waiting for us at Bellport dock and read us the riot act.

This shot was Feb 2004.

I remember the clammers driving out on the ice around 1976/77 when it really froze thick. Always kids ice skating on my canal back then. I also remember a kid from my school getting killed riding his bike across the bay and falling through... That was probably early 1980s.

And there were several cars that broke through the ice those years and are still rusting on the bay floor.

Driving on the ice here in the frozen tundra is common. On the lakes up North they plow roads and put street signs up. It's a virtual community.

-50 days til Flounder opener???? - wow that's soon- from my log last year I see it was 60+ degrees March 30th and I went down to the shore to wet a line.

Guess I won't be fishing this weekend.
Weather looks ok but the canal in bayshore is frozen (don't
want to damage the boat to go through it)
Oh well guess I'm goose hunting instead.

So what are those water conditions called?

That water is so calm, I bet I could run 65 mph in those conditions.

Up on Alton bay on lake Winnipesaukee they use the ice as an airport. The only FAA approved frozen lake airport I think.

I just read the regs. It says 10 days from the end of Duck season, I think (Weststern L.I.). Anyone know if that is right.

Cool. Thanks for the info. The birds have been flying like mad with the freeze up on the East End. A little to late.
