Could be Southampton, but picture 3 would need to be reversed as the backgound peninsula is on the western shore of the harbour, can't remember a lightship there either. Trinity house lights usually had the name on the side.
Rob2640 & Bomble, Amazing! Correct. I figured somebody with waaaay to much free time would eventually get it but never thought anyone would get it in less than 12 hours!
It is at the mouth of Southampton & it also could very well be reversed. The pics were taken either 1974 or 75.
I got busy recently & started to scan slides from trips over the years. Not much else to do when it is blowing a gale outside & raining. Sorry about the poorish quality of the pics. It was an overcast day but the biggest problem is what a humid climate does to stored slides over 30 years. Many were not even worth scanning due to mildew on them. I might take a shot at photoshopping some of the better ones.
I actually rode that hydrofoil a few years before. It did the Southampton to Cowes, Isle of Wight run across the Solent. The day I rode it there must have been a THT 8-10' sea (well more like 4-5') in the middle of the Solent. Quite a ride. Imagine an aircraft in very heavy turbulence.
Can't remember whether it was powered by a pair of gas turbines or diesels but she cruised at over 40kts in anything up to a good sized chop & would do the Solent in just about anything that the far larger car ferrys would run in.
Doug, I actually live just a long the coast in Portsmouth, but am regularly travelling around the Solent in the course of my work - Was just surprised that it was somewhere I knew that wasn't in US.
Bomble, I'll post some more that will be familiar. Afishinado, the scanner is an Epson 4990 Photo. Comes with the frames to scan 35mm slides, 8 at a time, negative strips, or scan just like one of the basic scanners. I have not tried a film scan yet.
Due to the Bermuda climate I have lost many slides to mildew. The ones posted here have had minor automatic enhancement by the scanner during the scan. My photoshop experience is very limited but I'll bet great improvements can be made.
Doug, If it is of interest, the hydrofoil is on of the Red Funnel Shearwater Class Hydrofoil capable of carrying 67 passengers and powered by a Maybach, Mercedes Benz 1350hp V12 diesel which gave it a top speed of 33.5 knots.
