Re: The Dark Side
Nice trawler but it is missing the navigation lights . . . is that GMC at the front your anchor?
I hope that you have many years of enjoyment
When going through the mountains, get regular updates on the weather, it does snow in the winter
You do not want to go through the rockies during the winter without some winter driving experience . . . it can be treacherous, especially when hauling a big trailer . . . and the winds Just drive slow and carefully and pull to the side so traffic can pass . . . and get a CB so you can hear the truckers talk about the weather conditions
Nice rig! We did the opposite, after owning a 22' Prowler Lynx travel trailer for over ten years we sold it and bought our present boat. Paid $7800 for it in "89" and sold it for $8000 in "00". Not bad as far as re-sale is concerned! Have fun "roughing it"!
Given a choice & buying new I would have bought something with a Cummins in it. But hey, at 8 months old & only 16,000 miles on the 6.6L diesel this is not roughing it. It pulls almost 15,000# of trailer with ease. If there was a bridge from NC to Bermuda we just might be able to make the 600 miles on one fillup. The truck has a 45 gal aux tank.
All opened out the trailer has as much inside space as a typical 40' trawler.
We have no intentions of doing any winter driving. Been there. Done that. Got through I70 west of Denver one time 1/2 hour before they closed the highway. Driving in snow gets old real fast.
It is in storage now but we are looking forward to getting out & seeing the US & Canada.
BestMate, It is what can be don't when not giving lots of $$$$ to Saltus. Shakedown trip starts in April & ends in June. Me! Landlubber! Don't think so but 08 may see Veebye's having a dry bottom all summer. Hello Alaska!!!
If you have not already found it, there is a nice RV Forum at www.irv2.com .... .
If you are passin through along I-10 in the Baton Rouge area drop a PM or something. Would be nice to visit with ya. Most likely over some of the good food we have around here.

I am assuming that the trailer and truck are somewhere on the mainland. If not, how are you going to get them to the states and use them? We bought a 21.5' fifth wheel in 1993 and now, when we go to the lakes for a stayover, we just hook up the trailer and put the boat behind it and journey down the road. Pull with a Duramax, 2003, and it works quite well for us. We are considering going a little bigger for retirement travel in a couple of years, maybe 24-25' with at least one slideout. Hope you have a great trip to Alaska. Make sure you have a couple of spares and have your insurance up to date, you will probably have to replace a windshield at least one during your trip.

Welder, the rig is currently in the Austin area & we plan to be near Dallas for a weekend near the end of April. The Admiral is a big rodeo fan so a night at the Mesquite Rodeo should be fun.
Megabyte, as it happens BWI will be our base US airport. You might be able to help with something. We are looking for storage, preferably covered but not necessarily indoor, for the trailer & truck. We think we have something lined up on the Eastern Shore for the summer but obviously your side of the bridge is more desirable if only to minimise the hassel of renting a car at the begining & end of each trip just to get us to wherever the rig is stored.
Jalachty, one of the great myths about the Alaska Highway is that it is rough & you are guaranteed to get a cracked windshield,or worse. Check on www.rv.net on the Alaska forum. The Alaska Highway these days is about 100% paved except areas of repairs, just like anywhere else. The trick to Alaska driving is to slow down & drive to suit conditions. Sure there are some gravel sections on major roads but for the most part it is quite civilized.
Wasn't trying to say that all the roads to Alaska are bad. Had a client that took his new motorhome to Alaska last summer and did indeed lose a windshield and had to replace one tire. I realize this can happen anywhere, I have a bunch of "stars" in my pickup windshield from construction around here in Wyoming. We basically have two seasons here, winter and construction. By the way, nice looking fifth-wheel and truck. Hope you have a wonderful trip. I see that you are driving up from somewhere in Texas. If you happen to come through Wyoming, give me a call and we could at least meet each other if not get you on a lake here in the west, maybe Jackson Lake in the Grand Tetons, it's only about 4 1/2 hours away from our home. I would venture to guess, though, that you will be traveling a little bit farther west to get to Canada and then Alaska, but the offer stands if you have the time and are in the area.

Doug, don't feel bad. We gave up on the idea of a trawler for now and bought this about a year ago. A great way to travel. We normally carry 2 kayaks on top and pull a 15' Whaler behind. Just got back from 2 weeks in Florida. Have fun!
