Random Quote: I can't undo what GOD has done( one of my teachers)
I just received a quote of 1200 for the sides of my boat and wanted to find out how "home grown" rolled and tipped jobs went. Can any of you (that are not professionals) post pics of your boats that you painted? I would like to save the 900 smackers

Head over to bateau2.com and look at the builder galleries. Also the message board under the builder and painting sections. Probably not a better "home grown" painting resource than that.
Something to keep in mind, a decent paint alone probably costs 200 for the boat not to mention little things like tape, sand paper, primer, etc. Does that price include prep etc? really doesnt sound like a bad price.
You might be unpleasantly surprised by how much all the supplies add up too.
Sorry I didnt contribute any usefull pics though. One thing about rolling and tipping, at least with awlcraft is that you can sand and buff it, therefore removing many imperfections such as runs etc. Rolling and tipping can make for a better paint job than sprayd awlgrip for this verry reason, it can be wet sanded to perfection.

1200 is a steal to paint the hullsides...it looks like your boat is about 21'+
I had mine professionally shot with Awlgrip, 20' Boat, prep and paint ran about $1,600.00

But as I said, You can't tell much about the paint job from the pix's. You can tell it's all one color and you can see some shine to it, but that's about it.
Sand scratch's, bug divebomb's, run's, orange peel and holiday's can not be seen in the pix's.
I agree Warthog, although I spent a ton of time on prep and she came out very nice. But as you know it's all about the prep, the more time spent on getting her ready the better the finished boat will be,doesn't matter if she's sprayed or tipped,it'a all about the prep.
I had mine sprayed, but learned somethihng after watching him paint 3 boats - it's all about the prep...it took less than 3 hours to apply 6 coats, but 3 days to prep it....

That could not have been said any better, and it is extremely easy to paint your own boat.
Everyone has there own preference to paint type's, but i will recomend interlux perfection, looking at Glen's boat up there if you take your time with prep, perfection can turn out that well. Secondly look closely at using a low cost HPLV sprayer, expensed all out it may run you $350.00 and you get a good 8 year's of life and you ready for any quick uhh ohh's along the way
Id post some pic's for ya, but im a bit to new here........... guess i'll have to get the kid's to enlightn me.
I'm rolling and tipping my truck. I did a fender the other week. This was my first time rolling and tipping. It's a fairly difficult process and I recommend you practice a little. I ended up having to wet sand after painting, but the fender looks great.
Can you color sand Awlgrip? I know you can with Imron. What about these epoxy based paints? I've seen boats that I think were rolled and tipped and frankly the finish looked like mild non-skid.
You don't need to color sand. When you do it right, it comes out extremely smooth. I only did one small corner of my fender right so I had to color sand.
I did my first roll and tip job on the blue stripe on my boat. Only the blue stripe. It came out pretty good but like said above the pics don't show the imperfections. There are a few spots that orange peeled and a couple of minor runs, all of which you have to be looking for to see. I believe my next job will be better as Ilearned a lot from this small project.....preperation, preperation, preperation.
i rolled the perfection and didnt tip. i used foam rollers and changed the roller every 15sq feet. the paint leveled on its own and looks great. theres a few spots i know about but very few people see them.
Thanks for the pics and insight. Not sure which way I am going to go. I don't believe I have the patience for the prep work. Which ever way I go I will post pics when finished
