Default A little kitchen remodeling

We have been wanting to do some work to the kitchen. So far I have changed out all the lighting, stove, range vent/light, removed overhead trim boards to expose the upper portions and yesterday I changed out the sink.

Our ultimate goal is to change out the countertops, but for the ones we want we aren't willing to spend the $4k on a house we may not stay in (military).

Here's some pics from the time we bought the house to now (we've been here about 2 years now).

Marker - Fishing has not really been happening too much with the arrival of the little one and fishing doesn't really get hot here until it gets really cold. :-) These projects are to keep in earshot of the little (and the admiral for that matter). I gotta admit this too, I do want to see my daughter a lot when I get to the weekends.

Bailey, you're reading my mind!

I don't know about many of you guys and gals, but I have made it a point to document on film the progress of any project I do. It's funny when you go back and look at where you started, see the progress as you've come along and then decide where you want i t all to end up.

Chris, the only thing it is missing is a large blue marlin or sailfish mount!

OK, maybe a smaller Wahoo!

Looking good!

Hey Chris

Nice work there.

Doing some remodeling here. Been going on for a while, taking it one room at a time. So far I have done all three bathrooms, all four bedrooms, hallway, utility room and the office. Changing out bedroom doors (hollow to solid core), exterior doors, flooring, molding, updating wiring and painting.

Next up will be the great room (kitchen-dinning-living room) lots more square footage than the other rooms. Some of the worked planned is building firdowns above the cabinets, ( noticed you removed yours), new counter tops (granite tile top and backsplash) undercabinet lighting, new cabinet doors, crown molding throughout, replace existing fireplace and facade, remove wainscotting and install chair railing, tile floors. I will be doing all the work myself if the Good Lord is willing. My time line figures show about 3 months of work, but I am not going to jump into it until after the first of the year. A man has to have some down time.

I sure wish I had kept a running photo history of the work in progress. Always mean to do it but it seems never to happen.

Looks sharp Chris! If ya don't want invest a lot of money but want a heck of a surface for real cooks, lay some tile countertops. We looked at granite but it would've taken three big pieces. I decided to get some high quality tile and did the whole job myself for around $300 vs. $5K for granite. I love it, I don't know if you guys remember what it looked like. Just a thought, since you could obviously do it yourself.

Nice job Chris. Looks like you got off easy without having to add the under counter microwave/vent hood. I have been fighting the counter top expense too. I have given serious thought to just tiling them. There's a wholesale place out on 17 where you can get the materials at less than half the cost at Lowes or Home Depot. I've already done the bathroom vanities, but they were small and simple compared to the kitchen.

The big specks are starting to show in the river now, so we need to go sometime soon.

I've had tile countertops and, while I agree they're nice and durable, I find them a pain to clean. The grout just wants to hold crumbs and spills when you wipe things down.

As far as new counter tops......Our last house had high gloss formica. It can scratch easy but looks so much nicer than the older stuff. My bro just built all his counter tops and picked a high gloss. Hard to justify 110-160/ft solid surface stuff. The gloss formica is about a 100 a sheet, give or take. Get it layed down right the first time but not too hard to work with. I agree.....Crown would finish it nicely. Really nice job overall.

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys think about where the crown moulding should go. More specifically I guess I have been beating around the idea of mounting it to the top of the cabinets themselves and placing recessed/hidden lighting behind it.

Or, just mount the crown moulding normally (to the ceiling) and leave the cabinets alone.

I can say this, I am *about* finished with the kitchen. I have new pulls coming, in fact they should be here today. They are baiscally the same pulls, just new and the brass is shiney and not worn

I also plan on replacing the hinges with newer, cleaner, better functioing and somewhat brighter brass colored hinges. At the same time I replace the hinges, I am going to recoat the inside and outside of the cabinet doors with a fresh coat of semi-gloss polyurethane. I figure I'll have them off anyways, might as well get 'er done and it will dress up those cabinets immensely....

We almost decided to go the route of painting the kitchen cabinets because it seemed so drab in there. Now I don't think so since we are getting it where we want it and the look of it has changed so much.

I almost bought/installed an over range microwave but I have always toiled with the space limitation since we have less than the recommended space needed by about 3 inches. I think we would have just over 2 feet above the stove, where recommended is like 30".

I don't think I would tile, but who knows... I'll probably be tiling next weekend!

Fishing - Let's go! I don't think I have told you about my trip to TX. I hooked into a MOTHER of a trout, tossed the hook when she rolled over as I was netting her. She was AT LEAST 30" - I figure in the 32-33" range and probably 9 lbs.

Directly on the cabinet tops is typically where it goes. You'd be surprised what it does. Lighting behind the crown will just provide ambient light, not enough to work by.

Chris I would mount the crown molding on the top edge (overlap 1/2 to 1" or so) of the cabinets. Install a small piece of pine as a backer. Use a 3 1/2 crown this will conceal the back lighting "great idea" and give the cabinets a finished look

if you want to see an idea for crown, you can check this link. this is my kitchen project that we just finished this year. I am still doing the crown around the rest of the house (trying to finish the living room tonight for guest tomorrow, as a matter of fact!).

http://members.cox.net/jgouveia3/kitchenproject.htm

i can take some detailed pcitures of the crown if you need them (its actually 3 different moulds together).
