Default 86' Pursuit Tiara cleaning!!

First off ,..been lurking around for years and ADMIRE the know how of this site which is why I've become more active!!!!THANKS TO ALL

I have a 26 Pursuit that needs exterior tlc,......quite frankly,..a novice of buffing and sorts,....my hull needs a good down home buffing and cleaning......I've heard the stories and tried to follow threads here but they go so fast thru the board............HEAVY oxidation and a good way to restore some shine..it's an 86 Battle wagon from the Cape(MA) Used to be a inshore bluefin slayer but now a fluke and seabass killer,...just lookin for a few hints to help shine it up a bit.......

I understand never to be showroom,..but the best chance of getting some 10 years of neglect(not horrible) off ....Again this site is AMAZING with knowledge,..looking for a little help...........was a t Defender today as it is 10 minutes away,..didn;t see anything that wow'd me...used 3m Color restoroer last year and it worked pretty good ,..just looking for some thoughts or anyone local in SE Ct(save the I'm Sorry's) that might wanna have a few pops and show me how my 2 year old (to me) rig may shine again!!!!

Thanks to all , and

-Chris

I had a 1988 Pursuit, and because the gel coat was very thick, a good wet sanding followed by buffing and waxing did wonders. I started with 1200 grit wet sandpaper, and then compounded. If doing it again, I think I would try 1500 -1800 grit wet sandpaper, then compound. good luck. DAJ

3M Super duty is a pretty aggressive compound that can be found at most stores, follow up with 3m finesse it ii will really help to enhance gloss and remove anything left behind from the first compound then go over with what ever wax you would like.

I have an 89 pursuit 2800, I bought it this year, it hasn't been buffed in a long long time. I just finished it today and used 3m super duty mixed with a little water and yachtbrite buff magic. I used a 6" toary buffer at speed 3. I had to go over it a couple times but it shines like a mirror now. It looked like it's never been buffed before I did it.

I recently used the 3m heavy duty and it did wonders to my old oxidized hull. I don't think oxidation could get any worse than what I had. After compounding I put some wax and it shines like hell now.

I'm certainly no expert, but I have made some mistakes on gel coat to know a little something.

Here's how I would proceed if I were you.

I would go to Harbor Freight and get the pictured polisher, $30. Get some buffing pads for it and some boating compound. There are tons available and a search here would turn up many choices.

Than I would start by buffing the gel coat with the compound, but I wouldn't use the coarsest compound I could find.

If you spend a day or two and the boat isn't shining brightly, I'd consider other options like wet sanding, but I would not do this right away. Wet sanding can lead to hiring a pro to re-gel coat spots on your boat. Take my word for it.

I did wet sand a few spots and learned quickly about that  ended up saving everything and sanding out with 1200 grit,...buffinbg took the rest and I'm VERY happy witht the results,...I did not use 3m Super Duty I used the Color Restorer.......worked GREAT!!!!!
