Should be a canister spin on device, similar to a spin on oil filter. Although, I had a SR AJ that had a water seperator only device before a canister per engine. It had a pet cock to drain water. It should be somewhere near engine or close to tank. If you have a galvanized tank.,YOU NEED TO EXAMINE IT FOR RUST EATING THROUGH. A 1985 boat should have aluminum and aluminum still corrodes. If you don't have a water seperator, there is no doubt that you are getting water in carb. If you find it, unscrew, turn it upside down and pour content into empty bucket and examine. This may be source of engine problems.

Okay...not sure if galivenized or aluminum tank...will check when hunting for the fuel filter.

99.9% sure no seperator...suggestions on brand name or such for a seperator? and links or insight on how best to add it to the system?

May get there on Sat if not on Sun. to see about tank material.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I will explore on Monday evening...my side job had my super tied-up since Thursday.

And I fully understand your suggestion and specs. I will find or I will get one.

Any thoughts on 'regularly'? we may use the boat 3 evenings (an hour or 2) in a week and not again for 3 weeks...

THANK YOU for the widsom!!!

The fuel/water separator may have been an option back then. If it had it, it would be on the front starboard side near the engine mount. It looks like an oil filter. The fuel filter itself is part of the fuel pum depending on whether you had a low or high volume pump. Loosen the nut on the wire around the cup of the fuel pump and remove the cup to access the filter.

Okay....we have some progress. I finally got some free time, yippy! I got in there and mine looks almost identical to the upper picture you have posted. And the filter has no sign of being a 'water seperating' filter; as the upper image notes could be an option.

So, I am thinking...I should likley get one on there...right?

It appears I have both the room and the slack in the fuel line getting to that point. I am inclined to get a fuel/water seperator and install it just before the fuel pump (that is called the fuel pump there, right?).

Sound like a plan?

Also...factory service manual ordered and should be here in about a week. Still looking for the right manual for the outdrive...preferably, a factory one.
