Stuck Ship Off Fort Lauderdale Beach
(CBS4 News) FT. LAUDERDALE There a new tourist attraction off the coast of Fort Lauderdale beach. It’s a giant cargo ship that’s run aground.
The ship, called the “Clipper Lasco”, is more than 550 feet long. According to the Coast Guard, the ship was inbound to Port Everglades, fully loaded with 270 metric tons of bauxite, which is the ore used to make aluminum.
There are conflicting reports about whether the ship is also loaded with 290 metric tons of diesel fuel.
The last port of call for the Bahamanian flagged ship was Sete, France.
The ship is stranded directly east of Beach Place on Fort Lauderdale Beach.
The Coast Guard is on the scene investigating how it happened and how to free the stuck ship from the ocean floor.
I hate vessels who destroy our environment! The fine should be being barred from entry permanently. How does your hook slip with the risk associated with not hooking properly (assuming she was at anchorage with no mechanical failure).
pooldoo73 - 9/15/2006 6:54 AM That ship surely wasn't carrying much of a cargo. 270 metric tons of bauxite and maybe 270 metric tons of diesel? Those numbers cannot be right.
The article says 27,500MT of cargo... that will be difficult to remove to "lighten ship"..
