Default Marine Overdrive Sytem!!! Save fuel like the automobile!

Marine Overdrive System

Just thought I would share this new method for saving fuel using old technology.

........

---
The fuel economy, or fuel savings was evaluated at gallons per hour at speeds from 22 mph to 55 mph in direct drive versus overdrive. I.E., Gallons per hour usage at 22 mph in direct drive versus gallons per hour usage at 22 mph in overdrive. Gallons per hour usage at 35 mph in direct drive versus gallons per hour usage at 35 mph in overdrive, and so on. The overall fuel savings at 4,200 ft. elevation was 15.7%, the estimated fuel savings at sea level would be in the 20 to 21% range.

Fixed link. The boat was at the Shootout all last week for demo, at the time i talked to the inventor it had 400+ hrs of testing.

You should read the testing page with results.

The test page is worthless, just a claim of better mileage no data. So are you actually supposed to shift this thing? Hop up on plane in low gear shift and now your prop is slipping big time? I guess you would have to underprop to begin with so you wouldnt lug the motor. Whats the point?

got to agree o/d for the rolling resistance of a car is a different world to the water resistance on a boat, where you are always going up hill, so to speak

there was one heavy commercial boat i saw and there would probably be others, than ran a 2 speed but it was 1st gear to get out of the hole and second for cruise and wot

Over proping would do tyhe same thing as this. that is bunt more fuel and shorten eng life . the only way this would be good if you way under prop to start with . then it would be like a 2 speed. BTW its been done as noted before , OD on a boat just won't work in the real world . one more thing -

Trawler,

You hit the nail right on the head. Here is what I found.

I think the guy is full of poop. First of all, I checked Sea Arrow boats web site. His boat looks like the V-200 which according to manufturers specs is 2500 pounds with a maximum weight capacity of 1656. So add 2500 + 1656 and you have 4156 pound capacity. Plus you have not added gear, gas and passengers. So he says the boats weight is 4,050 (without passengers gear and gas) which means that if he was the only one in the boat he would have to weigh 106 pounds (not likely at all) and the boat is now at is weight capacity. Now take a 31 gallon fuel tank. I think gas is something like 6 pounds per gallon. That means an empty tank at 10 gallons would add another 60 pounds. Then add the weight of his invention. He is running the boat way above the maximum capacity.

Also, Sea Arrow comes with a 190 hp engine. He is claiming that he is using a Mercruiser 5.7 (260 hp). That engine weighs a lot more than a 190 hp any day of the week. Add another 150 pounds. The poop is piling pretty high now.

I checked the link to go see his invention at the 18th annual shootout. He is not mentioned anywhere.
He never even published any patent numbers, pictures, testimonials (other than his own).

MYTH BUSTED !

It seems like he is trying to promote the race.

PS> Wiley, Send this thread to the bilge where it belongs. If BS could be packaged and sold his claim would make more than his "pattented" invention ever will.

Wouldn't it be simpler and less expensive to come up with a prop with continuously variable pitch?

You might find this interesting, seems to be more suited to increasing hole-shot but possibly if set up just right might help fuel economy. I never was that interested myself due to cost.

Will it work with the magic hydrogen from water system or magic gas pills? Think of the savings then!

There probably are a few heavy, hard-to-plane hulls this might help. Once on plane, the overall effort to keep the vessel going may be able to be reduced -slightly-.

Then there's the rest of us. In the real world. Where the motors are stamped "Brought to you by people smarter than you."
