I was walking around the Bay Bridge Boat Show this weekend with one of my customers and we went on the 50'-something Jefferson Motoryacht that was there. While I will reserve my comments about the boat we heard the funniest thing I have ever heard come out of a boat salesman's mouth. He was bragging about something regarding the hull that he obviously knew nothing about and went on to describe the chiMes to us . I said, "this boat has chiMes?". He of course , my looked at me like I had never been on a boat before , my customer and I quickly left the boat laughing the whole way, my customer asked me if the chimes go off on the hour or half hour .
Too funny. , I hope you guys appreciate that as much as I did. The poor guy trying to sell the boat was trying to be so cool too.
How many times have I argued with guys over the pronunciation of Nibral props. So many people seem to think it is Ni-"brow". I guess they didn't learn their acronyms in grade school.
I have another broker friend who is extremely well versed in boats but still can't seem to accept that the "top sides" are the sides of the hull and not the part where you stand (deck). Oh well...
I hear "funny" comments at boat shows all the time! Usually it's after I ask the price of the boat I'm interested in! Some of the "numbers" thrown at me are HYSTERICAL!
Topside, means above deck. Nothing to do with the hull. That's why "going topside" is the same as going out on deck, especially on a multi-deck vessel and you are previously below the level of the main deck.
Perhaps that is how your friend got "topside" confused with "deck."
I think you and my friend must go to the same bar; Topside according to webster is:
Main Entry: 1top·side
Pronunciation: 'täp-'sId
Function: noun
Date: 1815
1 plural : the top portion of the outer surface of a ship on each side above the waterline
2 : the highest level of authority
3 : the upper portion of the ionosphere
The topsides of a boat are from the waterline to the rub rail on a hull, nothing to do with what is actually on deck. Possible being used in another form, like "let's go topsides" it could mean something else, but when referring to a boat, it is the hull sides. You got me feeling a little insecure there for a minute, had to look up the actual definition.
Drydoc, you beat me to the punch with your post. I did not see your boat, I did not have much time at all to walk around. Either the show was busy or it was raining at all times. That pretty much kept me in the shelter of the booth, or talking to people. I hope you made it there on Sunday, it was the best day to go to the show. The rest of the days were kind of miserable.
He probably opened an access door to show you the billage pump, too. (I had a Sergeant in the Army that called it a billage pump, no matter how many times I corrected him.)
And did you see all the ropes tieing the boats to the docks?
Jim,
I came by the booth on Saturday, but no one was there! Oh well, we didn't stick around to long due to the weather. Lots of nice boats there, I really liked the 32' Judge Convertible, but for the life of me don't understand why they would build that beautiful boat and then cheap it up with the Fentress deck hatches used for the transom box.
Sorry I missed you. We were always close to our booth, but visited with our neighbors from time to time. I met dangerousdan there, and Dr. Dan, if I would have seen you it would have been a trifecta
What's wrong with neopreem I gots a pair of neopreem boots under the carporch right now. But to find em I would have to put some battrees in my flashlight cause the lectric bulb is burndid out.
Oh! and by the way my boat gots reverend CHIMES.
