Default Water In Fuel/Optimax

I just put a new Optimax 150 on the boat this summer and after break in took it out to the coast for a 4 day fishing trip. On the second day I filled up at the marina and after running for an hour the next morning I start getting the " water in gas " alarm. Engine was running great and I called my mechanic and his advice was to keep using it since it may just be a bad sensor and just bring it in when I got back. It continued to run great on the trip and I dropped it off today. He hooks it to the computer and, in fact, it says I have water in the on-engine fuel filter. He pulls it and a tiny amount of water comes out. I have a Racor in the line ahead of this filter, it is new and showed no water in it..I suspect I got bad gas but I have 2 questions:

Can I be picking up this water after the Racor?

Or is the Racor not good enough to filter out that tiny amount of h2o and is anyone else having this problem with an Optimax..?

Thanks in advance

I have read more than one post about fuel problems even with a 10 micron Racor filter/seperator. With water and solids(metal shavings from a fuel tank from one guy if I remember right). Doesn`t make me feel too good about the one on my boat but it`s better than nothing(I also have a dinky inline filter under the cowl of my carbed 200 Merc). Good to have that nicer one under your cowl, although I hear they are real sensitive to water. Good luck.

I have had the water in fuel alarm go off twice as well. A quick drain of the fuel/water seperator under the cowling had me good to go. The alarms occurred the first trip after a fill up with me.

funny you say the sensors are sensitive in the Opti's because both times I drained the seperator yeilded almost no signs of water. A good thing i guess. My boat will be run offshore for the first time next week. I plan to drain the seperator prior to leaving the dock.

I had the same issues w/ twin 225 opti's. After a YEAR of fighting the problem, I bought a new boat and the problem went away! The new boat doesn't have opti's!!!!

I would check with your mechanic if mercury allows a filter before the one on the motor. for warrenty issues if they may arise (lean condition with extra filter) I run a seperate 10 micorn filter per motor on my boat .out of warrenty as Im sure not going to drain one of there filters on the motor in 4 ' swells of my bracket ,also I seen crap get by the 10 micron filters as well, from what I have read and my own experience good luck with the water issues ,hope you make out better than myself

Now the Opti's produce water...this is new info even for this site. Thanks for the detailed input.

A mechanic from Key Largo told me if you remove the check valve from the fuel pickup in the tank, there is no issue with adding the RACOR.
I have 750 hrs on my 03 225 with no issues.
