I am pricing a new SeaHunt CC and although I am familiar and comfortable buying a Honda or Yamaha 4 stroke, I know little about Mercury 4 strokes. The local dealer is a Merc dealer, and although he can get the boat pre-rigged with the Yamaha, he suggested the Mercury 4 stroke EFI 115. Possibly a better price, EFI (which he claims Yamaha does not have), and much better/knowledgeable service from him.
I heard the Yamaha 4 strokes and the Mercury 4 strokes are "the same enigne"??
What does that mean? Is the Merc as solid an O/B as I have heard the Yamaha is??
I would not hesitate to buy the 115 EFI Merc. In fact, they are hard to get..(Back ordered) Snap it up! Mercury and Yamaha for years have been sharing technology (engine blocks etc) If I'm not mistaken the 115 is a shared block..I do agree whatever you buy in 4 stroke get an EFI.
Actually the boat is the Triton 202. Now, I know exactly what the thought is - underpowered...
Believe me, I've been struggling with this, but not too much. I am actually pricing the same boat out with a Honda 130hp from another dealer as well.
But, my way of thinking is such:
-I will trade off perhaps the optimum power plant for the clean and quiet of a 4 stroke. Not a whole lot of choices above 115: Honda 130, Suzuki 140.....
-Not too concerned with speed. Top end of 35mph would be fine, and that is with a light load of 2 people (i.e. fishing rather than family time...) I have spoken to Joel at the factory and others with heavier boats (Seaswirl 1851DC, Angler 204F -this hull is 1900lbs) with F115's and believe I will get that kind of speed or more.
Is this an ideal O/B for a 20ft CC (19'7") - no, not in hp. Will it suit my overall needs - I think so. And re-sale I will not take into account because I plan on fishing this boat a long time, and if Im in a position to have to sell, I'll probably have bigger things to worry about...
But, that's just what Im thinking...what are you thinking?
Rather than a case of lying, Im sure it is simply a case of mis- or lack of information. This dealer is a Mercury dealer, and has admittedly never worked with Yamaha outboards. He can have the boat factory rigged with a Yamaha, but he was the first to admit he wouldn't/couldn't service it, or at least was not a factory authorized dealer or service provider.
This dealer is good. He is pricing the boat with the Yamaha and with the Merc and he says price-wise it may be a wash...even. He is asking me to consider a Merc so he can give me authorized service and warranty work if needed.
Watch those salespersons. I was walking through Bass Pro Shops Boat section today and was cornered by a salesperson who was asking if I was interested in a boat. I said no thank you I have a 26 Mako with twin Yamahas and am awaiting delivery on a 18.5 ft boat with a Yamaha 115 four stroke on it.
The unknowing sales person blurted out "You know that four stroke is a Mercury don't you.????? go figure.... if I had been looking for a boat, I would have lost the desire right there...with that sales person.
Live free or die? Do you REALLY get away with buying a boat in NH and NOT PAYING TAXES??? If so, very cool!!!
I have the Yamaha (ahem - Mercury 115 4 Stroke ) F115 on a 18' Scout. Love the motor! Fuel efficient, quiet, low maintenance, easy to flush and will move my Scout with t-top 43 MPH/GPF (after about a 3 second plane time).
You didn't mention the size of the Sea Hunt, but if it is in the 18/19' range (around 3000 lbs.) - the 115 4-Stroke will do the job.
The sales man obviously does not know what he is talking about. The "merc" 115efi four stroke is made by Yamaha, just like the "merc" 225efi four stroke is made by Yamaha. Same motor different color and different fittings (ie: harness, throttle and shift cable).
Good luck in actually taking delivery of your boat if you buy it. What he probably didnt tell you either is that those motors are on indefinite back order. Not even the manufacturers can get them right now. Thats not just the mercs either the Yammi's are the same way.
I think something is going on with them they are not telling us about

I AM PRO CHOICE
I choose to hunt, fish, trap, eat meat, and wear fur
It is the live free or die state and no, you don't have to pay sales tax. Best part is you can buy in another state (I bought mine in NY) and did not have to pay sales tax either. Now if you are CEO of TYCO you best watch out
On a serious note, I run a yami F115 on a 19ft (19ft 2 inch) Key West CC. It is a great set up! Top speed is 41-43mph on a flat lake. I can troll at 600rpm's all day and use hardly any fuel.
I think you'd be fine with the F115 on the 20ft boat.
And the Merc uses a Yami powerhead but it uses a merc lower unit. I spoke with one dealer who sells both and he said the yami lower unit is a built a bit better. I'm not saying I believe him, it's just what he said to me this spring.
Good luck with you choice- sounds like a great set up.
In this debate, there is on difference. They are the same engine !
The real question is, where do you plan to have it serviced ? In my neck of the woods there are quite a few Mercury dealers and a not so many Yamaha dealers. That is why my 115 EFI is painted black.
P.S. you won't be disappointed, it's a great engine!!
paul in nh. you will certainly get the performance you say you want w/ the 202 115 4strk. i have a 202 w/ a yam 115 4strk. tops out at 42-43 6000 rpm. cruise at 4200-4600 betweeen 25 and 30 mph. not a speed merch but a good combo. by the way i have a t-top installed and its a glass top and i run mostly one or two people light to moderate loads.
Sounds like a great motor-I did not realize that the Merc/Yami were the same. I asked about the boat's size only because I am very interested in the new 186. I currently have a 175 Escape DC with a 90 Johnson and am happy, but I really need a little more length, deadrise and a CC. I would like to equip the 186 with a 115 4 stroke. Called the factory and got a very friendly person (I have heard nothing but great things about Sea Hunt and their service). Rep said that the 186's (1700 lbs) move nearly 47 with a 115 4-stroke, so you should have no problem getting 40 mph on the 202 (13 inches longer and 200 lbs heavier). Then again, reps say a lot to sell a boat. Sea trials are key.
