Default Best 115HP outboard ?

I'm in the market for a new 115 HP outboard and my two greatest priorities with it are #1 reliability, #2 weight, #3 price and #4 fuel economy. There is no clear cut winner that I can see...below are the pros/cons of each. It looks like a carb Johnson or Yamaha vs. a Suzuki or Merc Opti. Can anyone comment on the reliability between these? Below are the pros/cons as I see them.

Evinrude, 369 lbs (relatively lightweight), decent fuel economy, highest price @ $9k, reliability ??? to new to tell

Johnson carb, 335 lbs (lightest of the group), poor economy, lowest price $6k, reliability history good

Mercury Opti, 375 lbs, good economy, $7.3k price, good reliability...middle of the road on everything

Mercury 4 stroke, 399 lbs, good economy, $7.8k price, good reliability I think,

Suzuki 4 stroke, 416 lbs, good economy, $7k price, good reliability

Yamaha carb, 358 lbs, poor economy, $6k price, good reliability

Yamaha 4 stroke, 402 lbs, good economy, $7.8k, fair reliability

Well, if your top two priorities really are reliability and weight, then you've answered your own question, haven't you? It's the carbed Johnson according to your own data.

I haven't seen any problems with the Yam yet. A little guttless but that's O.k. on a small boat. The Merc 4 stroke is still a Yam powerhead.

The issue I have with the 115 Yamaha 4 stroke is a small sample of one, my father in law's. A 2001 model which has had the fuel pump replaced four times and an injector on two different occasions. He has a Rachor filter and treats each tank with stabilizer.....as his mechanic says "we see a lot of these pumps, it is just a bad design".

Good price on the Merc smokers, what is the weight on those?

I have a 2004 Mercury 115 HP EFI 4-stroke outboard on my 1802 Trophy (cuddy cabin fishing boat) and it is so far so good with about 50 hours of running time. I am getting about 5~6 mpg when running at 3500~4000 rpm. Even after 5~6 months of storage, the engine starts at one twist of key. The engine layout (inside the cowling) is really clean and easy to work on, maintenance wise (filters, plugs, etc.) - this is really important to me because I do mostly by myself. As for the performance, I can pull a skier w/ no problem. The power feels little soft or bogging at low rpm but when it hits 3000 rpm, the powerband is kicking in all the way to 5500 rpm. I think my boat weighs around 2500 lbs.

I have the 2006 115 Opti on a 19' Kenner and couldn't be happier with the performance! Starts every time, great fuel economy and is pretty quiet. I'm a little over-proped and it turns 5200 at WOT with a top end of 48 on the speedo. The controls SUCK (I got the basic chrome plastic set-up) and it's downright hard to get it to the speed you want. The oil fill is very easy to use and check and the Smartcraft gauges are available as well. All in all, a pretty good package...

I have a 115 zuke-it's been a good motor though I admit I've not had it long.

Power's not been an issue. No BS, no hesitation, no lack of power anywhere in the power band.

Suzuki is a good engine but tends to have corrosion issues. Once again, merc 4 stroke is a yamaha powerhead.

With all due respect, the Yamaha F115 is at least as reliable as all of the others motors listed if not more so. I had mine for 6 years and had zero problems before trading it and the boat in. They only consistent complaint I have heard about this motor is the "making oil" comment which I never personally experienced. The fuel pump issue is news to me. I personally would never buy another carbed motor after having fuel injected motors....Turn the key and go no matter what the conditions....

Hi,
I'm on my 4th season now with Yamaha F115 4-stroke. Works fine so far. I prefer 4-strokes myself and I would not have any problem to hang a Suzuki DF115 or Mercury 115 EFI on my boat transom instead. I selected a Yamaha but that had more to do with the boat I bought new in 2003 was offered preinstalled with Yamaha instruments, controlbox etc and a reasonable price with boat and Yamaha outboard combination.

If you want price and reliability go with the Johnson. The 115 was built on a solid platform.

I would buy the verado as it is made the same as the bigger verados which are made doubly strong to handle the stress of suopercharging and forced induction. This engine is not supercharged. The lower end and block are stronger than any 115 needs to be. See the article in trailer boats mag on this motor. should be bulletproof for years...

Oh man, this is so easy. The Yamaha carb 2 stroke is EASILY the most reliable and durable engine Yamaha has ever produced. You should be able to get on for a hair over 5K.

I have a 2003 Yamaha 4 stroke, the motor runs fine, Cranks quick the first time every trip, it may be a little finicky in hot weather and will not restart every time , I have to advance the throttle out of gear to get the motor to crank. Also seems like the volume of oil in the crankcase will increase mysteriously

The making oil issue came from improper oil level checking proceedure. Pull the dipstick, wipe, then re-dip for an accurate check.

I must assum eyou are sticking it on a smaller boat 18 foot or less. So fuel usage should be of minimal concern. I have an (2) 06 115 Yamahas with 115 hour and no problems, but on skiff I would probably get the 2 stroke models then the 4 stroke Yamaha.

I've not seen any corrosion issues on properly installed zukes, but hey - whaddo I know? I have seen just about every motor made with corrosion issues - just not anything specific to suzuki.
