Default Cummins 450C

Recently bought a Silverton 42C with Cummins 450C 8.3ltr. Before buying I did some research about them and cannot find much negative. Any input on these engines would be great, minor problems, hours logged, etc.
My fist impression with them is they are extremely strong, push this boat very well. No it dosent cruise at 30knts but a comfy 21 to 23 knts. Hardly burn any fuel at troll, and are not too bad at cruise. The best part is, not much soot, and when I shag (only once)down on them the dont billow black. New generation diesels are wonderful.

Thanks,
LC

Strongly suggest you head over to www.boatdiesel.com and spend 25 bucks to become a member. Use the search tool for 450 C Cummins and you'll have several days of reading. As a new owner of these diesels this will be the best 25 bucks you'll ever spend. There are some very knowledgeable Cummins technical people at that site and you will find that the 450 C is a great engine if maintained and propped correctly.

Good luck.

Have heard very good thing about them, EXCEPT - they seem to be having a metalergy (spelling) problem with the shaft that drives the raw water pump from the PTO. Seems to break ALOT. Covered under warranty, but it's expensive out of warranty. (I'm not sure if this is just the 5.9's or both the 5.9 and 8.3s) I second checking them out on boatdiesel. Specifically look for this problem.
