Default alarm on 2002 mercury outboard

I have recieved an alarm while running my 2002 mercury outboard (200 saltwater). It was the first time I have ever recieved one. It was a constant tone. Is there a way to determine what caused the alarm?

I immediately shut down the engine and check the oil in the container for the injection. It was fine. I never check the temp guage (it quits with the key).

After a few minutes, I started the outboard and the alarm never came on again (I was trolling in Lake Michigan for another 3 to 4 hours and couldn't reproduce the alarm)

Had the motor been running and then shut off for a short period? My Mercs will temp alarm if they are started shortly after being shut off, all the water drains and it takes a minute for new water to cool things back down.

A steady tone is an overheat condition. An intermittant or beeping tone is oil or fuel filter related.

What is the pressure on your water pressure gauge?

What do you mean when you say the temp gauge "quits with the key"? This gauge should operate when the ignition switch is in the ON position and not work when it is in the OFF position.

I will be honest......The alarm scared the hell out of me.....I went into a panic and immediately went back and starting messing with the oil container. It was rough and I thought I may have be in trouble. Got out the sea anchor...then continued...By the time I went back up to the front and turned the key back on...the temp was normal.

Thank you for the information....The "pee" has been a little weaker lately so I have scheduled the marina to change out the impellor and pump. I have never changed the pump and I constantly troll and have owned the boat for 4 seasons now.

Thank you thank you thank you

Check your poppet valve. It opens when the engine RPM's/water pressure come up and allows more water to circulate through the block.

If you can swing a wrench and socket, the impeller and pump can be changed in about an hour. The Merc kit retails for $109 and gives you all the wear items, gaskets, and o-rings. 5 or 6 bolts to hold the foot on the lower unit and 4 bolts to hold the water pump to the foot, that's all there is to it.

Not to scare you but you also may want to look at your other items in your cooling system...

Here's my thread with a similar problem..

Wouldnt hurt to take a look at your thermostats either...
