On July 2nd, 1776. The Second Continental Congress voted to ratify the document we know as the "Declaration of Independence" and adopt the "The United States of America" as the new nation's official name.
July 4th, was the day copies of the Declaration were received from the printer and the decision was anounced at a public reading of the document and they were made available for distribution.
Anyone who watches trivia shows on TV will know this little tid-bit.
So the 4th of July is the day the we celebrate learning of our independence from the United Kingdom.
