Default Fuel Filters

If your boat isn't equipped with an externally-mounted fuel / water separator, then get one. The Racor unit with 10 micron filter and the clear bowl is an excellent choice. The clear bowl allows regular monitoring of any water or debris in the filter.

Also, don't forget to check your engine-mounted fuel fiter.

An excellant suggestion to add a Racor if you don't already have one. However, concerning the need to check the engine-mounted filter, what's the point? The Racors really do their job.

I just removed my Merc EFI engine mounted filter (downstream from a Racor) after having it on the engine for four years. It did not have a drop of water in it and there was no debris on the element, at least as far as I could tell. I would have reinstalled it if I hadn't cut the can open to inspect the element.

I agree. Racors are the best. They have saved me in many of pinches offshore. Quite easy to drain and get back to fishing instead of the other types of screw-on filters that do not drain.

I found a small amount of water in both of my engine-mounted filters that had made it past the Racors.

Elusive, I have too. My problem was that I was not draining the racor frequently enough. Upon Racor saturation with H2O, a small amount will slip past (as stated by my friend/professional marine mechanic for years). After listening and not hearing this important data from him, I have not seen any more slip past the racors. Also, I have learned that the racor filters still need to be changed after about two seasons for me. I fish all year around and run lots of fuel through the Yammies. Still, the filters themselves will become less efficient with time like any other would.

I just put Racors on my Yamaha sererator assemblies, hope they work a little better than the Yammie filters.

Here is a link to a spin-on fuel filter test from a while back.

Seahorse, the link you provided does not work. I went to http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/ and tried to find an article on fuelfiltertest but was not successfull. What am I doing wrong?

How often should you drain the racors? I just did mine tonight and the amount of debris in the gas was incredible.

Copy and paste the following link into your browser. This worked for me, for some reason it will not link from THT.
