Default transmission rebuild price questions

Hello all,

I just purchased a 1977 mako 23 inboard and it was leaking transmission fluid. Being a newbie I took it in figuring I'd let a professional get it right rather than me quess about it.

Well, two weeks later they finally have a quote of nearly $1,000. Said it had been run hot. This seems very high to me.

Is it? How much does a full rebuild run?

thanks so much.

It depends on the transmission but the average for a complete rebuild seems to be around $1,200 to $2,000.
Good Luck.

I don't know what tranny you have, but $1,000 seems like a pretty good deal to remove, rebuild, and reinstall it.

Who quoted it? I have a friend over there who uses Bell Marine and has been very happy with their work. Heard a lot of horror stories from people who have used Brown.

sorry your finding that a survey would have been a good idea. But by all mean's if you cannot turn a wrenh and have no buddies that will teach you pay and inquire if you can hang out a simply learn a little .... it will pay off down the road so you at least know you way around the powertrain ,,,,,Good luck ....John

Hey y'all,

it was at Brown and I have now rescued it to Bell. They mistakingly sanded my bottom and took off my gelcoat. They put on bottom paint, but I am still livid. I got the boat in WI, and it was a 100% freshwater boat. The owner told me of a leak, and I even wet tested it, but noone knew it was toast.

I also had it surveyed. It was on a trailer and not started by the surveyor. The hull checked out perfect, but alas, it had a transmission problem.

WHAT DID BROWN DO? Are you going to keep it in the water? If not then I would make them do something other than bottom paint because it will oxidize and look like crap!!

I only wish I could have warned you sooner!! Bell did all the work on a friends inboard repower of a 24' Topaz with a Yanmar 250 - nice install.

Me too.

I think I am going to insist that they redo my gelcoat. I may even insist that they pick up the bill for someone else to do it.

I'll keep you posted. It really is a sweet boat, but they took it to me.

Go,
drop me an email...modunlavy@aol.com.

I have an inboard too and the mako IB was on my wish list, but couldn't find one. I am curious to know more about your rig. Got any pics?

I would make them put on new gelcoat!!
