Default 2001 Merc 225 EFI Question -- Running Rough

I've got an 01 Merc 225 EFI with about 300 hours that has been acting up lately...it's running rough and sometimes it acts like a carb engine would if it had water in the line...it's sputters or hesitates a bit and then picks right back up, a hassle but it hasn't left me yet. I changed the fuel water seperator, the inline filter and the plugs...and since then it hasn't gotten any better and won't do over 4,200 RPM's WOT.

I'm about to take it in but I just wanted to see if there was anything else obvious before I give up the ghost and hand over my wallet to my mechanic

Thanks in advance for your posts!

Default RE: 2001 Merc 225 EFI Question -- Running Rough

I have a 2002 Mercury 225 EFI. In 2005, The motor started running rough. The engine idled below 550rmps and was cutting off. Also lost 400rmps off its top end of 5750rpms. I did the same thing; changed spark plugs and fuel/seperator filter; no change. I put the boat in the shop. The Mercury tech ran compression test; all cylinders were strong at 135psi. Changed fuel filter, fuel diaphram and spark plugs. This produced better results, but the idle was extremely rough. The rough idle problem was resolved after replacing the TPI, MAP sensor and roller. This produced very good results; 47mph at 5750rpms. The engine idled smooth, 600rpms in neutral, 625 in gear.
Itís been almost 1 year since the boat was in the shop. I put it back in the shop 2 weeks ago for the same symptoms as 2005.
I had nothing but trouble from this engine. Yesterday, I ordered a 2007 225HP Yamaha. Having it installed next week. My plans for the Mercury; making a fishing reef.
Good luck with yours.

Better find another dealer/mechanic. Sorry about your bad luck. These were bulletproof motors. Don't let anyone tell you they weren't. Your guy is not compenent on these motors. This is only answer I can give you when that happens to a Fuellie merc. Get the Suzuki anyway if you are going to get the 4 stroke. It is the much better 4S motor.

Proline23, I offered a response to your lst post on this topic; was the engine new when you bought the boat? Water pump failure is a 30 minute repair. Sounds to me like you need to patronize a different shop. While you may indeed have a lemon, I ran 225EFI's for 3000 hours and with competent maintenance they are bulletproof. Did any of these "technicians" examine stator function or powerpack codes, as these will most likely reveal the root of your problems. Finally, a broken throttle cable is not an engine manufacturer defect and on a newer set-up more likely a rigging problem when engine was installed. Good luck with that Yamaha purchase.

The problem described by my fellow MOUNTAINEER above also sounds electrical or electronic in nature. One thing I can tell you is that these engines require caution when re-installing the cowling... it will easily will knock the wires off the plugs and coils and you may not notice. Again a failing stator will exhibit the symptoms described by both inquiries.

I will say I bought a 94 200 that had been sitting some, went all through it everything fine but it wouldn't run good, hesitating and missing. 1 bottle Evinrude Fuel System cleaner and 3 trips no problems= good stuff if you think it might be dirty injectors. It has 2 solutions 1 for deposits and 1 for general maintaince, I just put another in for deposits and will add another at the lighter solution.

Default 2001 Merc 225 EFI Question -- Running Rough

I'm determined not to take this thing in but I'm getting close to it. I pulled plugs and tried to plane the boat until I found the one with no change in performance so I figured that was the cylinder that wasn't firing. I got a new CDM module and installed it and the problem still persists. Some of the guys offered that it may be a MAP sensor or TPI...knowing that a new CDM module didn't help are there any reccomendations on what to replace next (I'm certain I'm only running on 5). Thanks in advance for any posts. ~jgh

I took my boat to NC last week. I was suppose to get a new Yamaha, but that didn't work out. Anyway,
I called a local dealer and he was able to take the boat that day. I had the boat back for following day. The tech found a bad TPI senor. I just had the part replaced last year. So you might want to try replacing that next.

sounds similar to a problem i had a few months ago on my Merc 250 EFI - loose coil wire. sounds like you just aren't getting a good enough connection.

Thanks proline23, I appreciate the help...sorry about the new yammi wasn't ready. I've got a 98' 90hp on my flats boat and it runs like a top....but so has the merc up until now!

So were the symptoms exactly like before....do you belive you were only running on 5 cylinders? Did the new TPI fix the problem?

It was running on all 6, but when you put the throttle down, the boat would sit in the hole for a few seconds before getting on top of the water. It was also lossing rpms. When I took it to the shop, the tech started it and the motor back-fired. He explained the TPI sensor sends the correct amount of fuel to the engine. In my case, the sensor was malfunctioning and not doing what is was suppose to do. The motor runs like a champ right now. After getting it back, the next day rode out 40 miles off NC for some bottom fishing. The motor stayed on all day and didn't miss a lick.
