Default Idle adjustment Johnson 150

I have a 2005 150 with carbs, everything about the motor is fine except that it is idling at 1100 rpm. I have never had the cowl off this motor and would like to have someone who has direct me first. I have torn apart outboards and put them back together I just want to be very over cautious with my first brand new motor. Can someone tell me how they would adjust the idle?
Thanks in advance!!

Is that the idle in gear, in the water?

Is the idle so low that the engine ocassionally stalls? I am having this issue with a johnon 200 carb when I go to nuetral and was about to post the same question. Someone told me that it's not as simple as just turning up an idle screw so I wanted to check as well before messing with it.

No in fact I was told that it should idle in gear at 650 rpm. Mine idles at 1050 - 1100 rpm in or out of gear. never stalled.

first a link and sync needs to be done {get a manual.read it and follow the instructions} before the idle speed is adjusted, its also recommended to adjust the fuel mixtures also.

This is what my OEM factory service manual for a 1997 V6 model says when you need to set the idle speed - your motor "could" be different ...

You must have the air silencer installed with the boat free in the water, not tied to a dock. Start it and let it get to normal operating temps and make sure "quick start" has disengaged, if equipped on that year. Shut OFF the engine!

Loosen locknut and adjust idle speed screw, clockwise to DECREASE idle speed, counter-CW to INCREASE idle speed. Start and verify idle speed. Stop OB and adjust as needed.

The OEM manual goes on further to mention that if the speed is inconsistent or the engine runs rough or spits lean, then you need to perform a Carb Mixture Adjustment.

On most OBs, that would be to turn the adjustable carb needle on each carb 1/8 turn counter-clockwise (WAIT at least 15 seconds after each adjustment change) and repeat until you get the highest consistent RPM. [If too rich, turn clockwise]

Repeat for each carb. To test, run @ near full throttle for a few minutes then back off to idle in neutral. It should maintain a smooth idle ... if not, re-adjust all carbs as needed.

The OEM manuals are AWESOME ... do not even consider a Seloc or Clymer version ...

Thank you very much for the info. I will purchase an OEM manual as soon as I can. Thanks again.

I need to increase the idle on my '93 Evinrude 200 (carb). It idles around 500 in neutral and eventually stalls out. I was told that I should increase it to about 750 RPM in neutral and 600 RPM in gear. I have already checked for air leaks and that wasn't the problem. Also, when I increase the idle from the controls at the helm, she runs fine.

I'm not sure which adjustment screw to use, so I went to the boat this morning and took a picture. Is the idle adjustment screw A, B or C? Also, please confirm that to increase the idle speed, you need to turn the screw counter clockwise.

Thanks.
David

Kinda hard to see in the pic but i'm pretty sure its B - if you watch when someone moves the throttle it will hit a stop should also have a boot on the end off it. I think C is a timing adjustment and not sure on A - just watch it when somebody moves it up and down.

If the idle speed is 1050-1100 either in gear [ in the water] or in neutral then the engine is stuck in 'QUICKSTART' The system that increases idle rpm when the engine is cold. This can be caused by an overcooling issue [ thermostats stuck open] or a defective temp sensor. Or maybe a bad power pack.
The temp sensor in the port head has two wires One tan and one white, the white one is used to turn off the quickstart function. To test disconnect and ground the white lead from the wire harness. This will shut off Quickstart if the Pack is OK.

It looks like a bunch of people hijacked your thread, posting about motors that bare no relation to yours.

Here is the real scoop:

To adjust the idle speed you will need to see your J-E dealer for the special EPAtamper-proof screwdriver to adjust the linkage. It is NOT a Torx bit, but some kind of special one.

Refer to this image:

http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p...utboard007.jpg

The arm inline with the ATDC with the ratchet marks facing the center bolt is the idle adjustment. That is an older motor pictured when they used Pozi-drive screws that looked like Phillips before they used the EPA mandated tamper-proof screw. You loosen the special screw a few turns then "click" the arm toward the " - " (minus) side to slow the idle speed.

It is possible that the Quick-Start feature on your motor is inoperative due to a bad temp sender on the port head or the white/black striped wire is disconnected from it. It may be worth your while to have a knowledgeable mechanic check things out for you first.

Good luck.

Damn, I just realized that I answered a 2 year old post. Oh well, perhaps someone with a 60° motor can make use of this.

It did help!!! My motor was idleing too high and your educational morsel helped me figure out why. For me it was a sensor wire on the back of the timing ring not allowing the spring to return the ring all the way back to the stop. I repositioned the wire and presto! Thanks!

This is a 6 yr old thread, start a new one and state the yr, model # and HP.
Otherwise your question makes no sense.

Some models don't have an idle mix, they are pre-set jets, idle speed on those is adjusted by ignition advance.
