After much research I think the 17' Cape Horn is the best value out there. Does anyone else have one and what kinds of speed can I expect with a 130 Yamaha, also, would you go with the 130 2 stroke or the 115 4 stroke?

I had a 19 so can't give much on the details re power etc. I will say Cape's are some incredibly rock solid boats and what you see is what you get. Take a test ride in some chop though if you think that may be an issue.

a good friend of mine has a new style CH 17. He runs a 115 Johnson on it. He will top out at about 32 mph. Surprises me since my 17 weighs same as his and I can trim out and get 35 with a 90.

Ill start by saying that I am a big cape horn fan, no nonsense, no frills, rock solid boats with more than avg deadrise in 21' model.

My buddys boat has some quirks. It really doesnt want to get the bow down. You shouldnt need trim tabs on a 17, but it definitely does better with a few hundred more lbs on the bow.

It also pounds, in a 6" chop. It will start the porpoising thing and get in a rhythm. It is dissapointing to experience that. Riding on the front console seat in smooth water is uncomfortable, but you cant go to back and stand cause the weight really needs to be up front.

I think his motor needs more - trim (tuck under) but its doing all it can. Maybe it should be shimmed or something? All I can say is take a test ride in a short chop and decide for yourself. Otherwise, its a big, stout, 17 that we fish 10 mile out in 2-3 seas.

Sometimes a replacement prop is all it takes to get the bow down. Worked for me. I also have trim tabs. Together, all conditions are under control. I have a Yamaha F100 on an Edgewater 175, and can get 39 - 41 mph @5900rpm, light fuel, 2 people and no bimini. I would have thought the Cape Horn with more power could do better. Check the prop. It is likely the culprit. The two boats are too similar in specs to be that far off in performance.

I agree with Alec -- somethin' aint rigged right on that Cape Horn 17 -- should do very well with a Johnson 115.

Yeah, I agree with the others on something being rigged wrong. I know some folks with a new CH17 with a 115 mercury 4 stroke and they cruise around 28 mph and top out in the low 40's. I'm seriously considering that same boat. I am trying to decide on power also. I think I'll probably go with the Suzuki, either the DF115 or DF140. Should be plenty of power either way.

I have a Scout 175, similar hull and weight, with a Yamaha 130. Hits 50 with 2 and a light load. Boat also has a t-top and radio box.

I have a F-115 on my 2002 cape 17 and cruise betweeb 27-29 mph on my GPS, and wide open at nearly 40. I do get a bit of porpusing if the trim is not set right. If the engine is too far up I get the bouncin but once I bring it down a bit the porpusing goes away totally. Love the boat also. A bit wet with a chop and some wind, but what do you expect in a 17 footer. I was out 25 miles a few weeks ago off Destin and had no problem. I did keep an eye on the weather though. That day I traveled just over 90 miles and refueled up the tank with $22.OO OF gas. I really love the milage and quietness of the four stroke.
Good luck with yours.

My dealer - the only one in NJ - wanted $18,300 w/o tax for a 17' hull, 90 2 str Yammy, and galv trailer. No I didn't take it.

Probably a 115hp Dodge, I believe(don't quote me) the 17 is rated for 140hp.

The 2003 models will be rated for 150 h.p. I am still trying to decide between the 130 and to 150.

I have a 2000 model (a tad smaller than the 2001 and up) 17 with a Yamaha 90 two stroke.

It will do around 38 MPH WOT and cruise comfortably at 25/26 at 3800 RPM with two and half tank. It will also porpoise if you try and kick the trim out too far, but a quick down trim input will get it to quit.

$18,300?? Whooooo, that's a tad high, but I guess if you can get it, I know NJ is high price country, but damn, and that with a 90? Ye-ikes. Look south, you should be able to get one with a 130 or F115 for that money (which you probably already know!).

The other day I had my CH 17 one mile out on Lake Nasworthy and the gale kicked up. Made it back to the dock safely, thank goodness. Got a little wet, but it was OK, it was fresh water .

Can't say enough about them, good boats, not perfect, not the latest technology, just good boats!

Mark

Howyadoing there, Mr Dwight? 25 miles out? Whhoooo! That's a might farther than I ever went. Whatdidya catch?

Are you sure the 2003 will be rated for a 150hp? I hadn't heard that before. Anyway 17300 with a 150 yam sounds about right, depending on options. Maybe you could do a little better or at least get them to throw in some extras, like batteries, anchor rope, anchor, etc.

Lucked out and found a used 17 CH today. It's a 2001 with a 130 H.P. Yamaha and Aluminum trailer. Comes with cooler seat, bimini top, 50 # Minn Kota trolling motor, spare battery, prop, trailer tire, and Yamaha multi gauges. Original owner is a neat freak engineer. The boat has 56 hours on it and is in showroom condition for $14,000. Does this sound like a good deal?

Dodge,
I have a 2002 CH17 w/ 2001 Merc.125 & a 2001 Loadmaster alum. trailer w/ torsion axles that I bought new 14 months ago for $15,800. Mine has the pedestal seats, but no bimini, trolling motor or, deluxe gauge package. With the options, low hours and condition you describe, it sounds like an easy descision.
Top speed for mine is 41.8mph @ 5200rpm on GPS. I also went through the porpoising problem. I cured it with a different prop. and, by adding a CoBra "The Edge" hydrofoil.
To date, I'm very happy with this boat. I especially like the layout. The only thing I don't like is, the angle of the console where the gauges are mounted, you have to bend down to read them if you're standing. The simple design and,rock-solid construction is what sold me on this boat, not to mention it's size!
Good luck and, keep us posted.

Tom
