Re: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
I did not get the extended warranty on mine last year and right now I am glad I didn't. the F225s have been faultless. it's like any other type of insurance, it only takes one bad problem and you will be grateful for it.
RE: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
Class Act: In general, extended warranties aren't worth the money. Remember, the people selling them have a lot of information, and they are in effect taking a bet with you, house rules. So the EXPECTATION--the average of a lot of such deals--is that you lose money by buying the extension. But you could be the one whose engine breaks down and who needs the warranty. Here's how to look at it in my opinion. If you are one of the unlucky ones, and you get say a $5,000 repair bill, can you afford it? How about $10,000? (Minus, of course, the $2,000 you spent on the warranty on each engine.) $4,000 is a chunk of change....

I don't keep boats very long. Resale is definatly better on a boat still under warranty... Dont you think?
Re: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
$2000 YIKES!! I was going to call Chatlee tomorrow and ask how much for the extended warranty on the same engine. Now it's yet another decision.... Go with the warranty or get trim tabs, and upgrade to one of those nice Lowrance LCX 110C's or LCX26CD's.
RE: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
It's unbelievable how many people on here just don't have a clue and seem to just spew out of their poop shoot.
I was reluctant to but the extended warranty. It cost me $2400. At 1885 hour I blew the powerhead. Had I not bought it, it would have cost over $10,000 for a new powerhead. I would have had to buy a new motor. Now I've got a brand new powerhead and a new trim motor.

Since I sell boats and do offer YES warranties, I can say with 100% certainty that having engine warranties on a boat that is for sale that are full transferable to the new owneris a definite plus.
Two products sitting there waiting for you to buy them....one has a factory warranty and one does not......hmmmm whichwould youbuy............

Re: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
Yes it is a difficult decision. But when you weigh the the potential downside of major repairs against the $4000, it is worth it. I asked every independent mechanic and yamaha dealer i have access to and they strongly suggested the purchase. Look for at least a 10% discount. I did it and the peace of mind is worth it.
RE: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
CapRozMaz raises a good point that hadn't occurred to me. No way would I get to 1885 hours in five years, even six, probably not in 10. But if you're going to be running those motors for several hundred hours a year, then I think the calculus is different. The sellers of the warranties probably are making their money on people like me, who run 100-150 hours/year. After 5 or 6 years, I'm still going to be well under 1,000 hours. So again, if you're going to be running say 300 hours per year, then it makes more sense, because the warranty is by calendar time, not engine hours. So you'd be making the odds work in your favor. Thanks again to CapRozMaz for making me think this through again.
Re: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
The dealer is am working with (Chatlee) has offered me a Pinnacle Platinum 6 year warranty for $2580 in lieu of the $2200 for the YS warranty (F225). The Pinnacle covers everything for 6 years regardless of wear/tear vs. factory defect? Anyone else have this warranty? Any hidden stuff with this Platinum? Sounds like a better deal than the YS. Your thoughts please?

I purchase the maximum extended warranties on all my vehicles. During the life of the extended warranty, I either "break even with the purchase price", or I am way ahead in terms of the cost of repairs. I presently have a 2003 vehicle with 73,000 miles that has a 7 year / 100,000 mile extended factory warranty. To date, the manufacturer has done about $3,000.00 dollars worth of repairs under the terms of the extended warranty. The warranty cost me $875.00 at the time of the vehicle purchase. I am ahead $2125.00 and I still have 27,000 miles left on the warranty. If the transmission fails in the next 27,000 miles the cost of a replacement unit will be somewhere between $3,000.00 to $6,000.00. The "new technology" is GREAT, but the cost of repair for the average consumer is "out of sight"! Once I get close to 100,000 miles, this vehicle will be traded for a new vehicle, and a new extended warranty. With a factory extended warranty, I can travel all over the United States, and get warranty repairs from a dealer. I think that is GREAT! I do not like to be "self insured"!--------Just my opinion!
Re: Yamaha F225 Extended Service Warranty - Worth the Money?
Sc,
That Pinnacle must be a outside insurance company warranty and definetly not YES from Yamaha. I would with out a doubt go the Yamaha YES route withyour dealerif you are considering it.YES is basically an extension of your 2nd and 3rd year of 4-strokeYamaha engine warranty. Any claims are handled exactly like a regular Yamaha engine warranty claim. No BS withanoutside insurance company.
Most of those outside warranties seem to good to be true until you have to make a claim andthen find out all the little hidden things thatit does not cover.
You can get the Yamaha's YES for much less then $2200 for a F225by shopping around a bit

Also for info...My buddy had a pair of F225's on his 32 foot regulator that he used chartering..I think they were 2003's....never any problems and sold the rig with 1800 hours on those engines....FYI.

Let's see, pretty much split in terms of opinions here. I have 470 hours on the engines now and would expect to put another 500 hours over the next three years. I don't plan on selling the boat in that period but who knows.
My mechanic says engines are in great shape. I don't know - I use Mobil 1 and change every 100 hours.
