I go 5000 miles between mine (using Rotella). I think some people go more miles. I know the people using Amsoil/Synthetic really push it (to like 15,000).

I personally change mine on a 2000PSD duallieevery 3000(give or take) using Shell Rotella 15w-40 in the spring-summer-fall months and in the winter I use the Ford Powerstroke 10w-30 oil. It starts much much easier(turns over faster) with the 10w-30.. Going on 175k miles with no problemsand the oil looks darnpretty clean most of the time.

It will use a little oil with the 10w-30 but none with the 15w-40.

Using Amsoil 100% synthetic 15W-40 I go the full 15,000 miles between oil changes but change the filter at 7,500 mile intervals. The oil does not break down like dino oil and keeping it clean via good filters is important. Never use the cheap filters...they pass too large of particles.

I run Amsoil dual byass system and Amsoil 15W-40, In my 96 power stroke, I sample it every 7000 bmiles and have over 35,0000 miles on the oil, I only change filters, No more four gallon oil changes for me! I used to change my rotella t at 3k back in the day. I run Amsoil in my DF 140 also Engine and gearcase 100hr intervals.

I think the 3k mile oil change intervalo has always been a way for manufacturers to squeeze extra money. Might be something that should be re-evaluated now that oil conservation has become more of an issue.
PS. 99 PSD every 5k miles.

NO! Get either factory filters or WIX filters anything else with diesels your rolling the dice.I have rescued two friends with collapsed fram filters.

I've had 6 Ford diesels since '92 and over 800,000 miles of use between them all, and I have always changed the oil and filter at 3,000 mile intervals. I've also NEVER had an oil/lubrication issue with any of them.

Coincidence? I don't think so...

Take care of your vehicle, and it will take care of you.

Or you can go the cheap route, skip a few services, and pay the mechanics big bucks later.

I've got a Cummins and I change every 10 to 15K. You might ask why I go so long. It's because I've had my used oil tested and it always comes back clean. The only reason I change it is because I just don't feel comfortable going past that even with an oil analysis.

The maintenance schedule is in the owners manual. Believe it or not, those engineers know what they're talking about.

I would avoid Fram oil filters. They're not constructed as well as Mobil 1, Baldwin, Wix, etc. Cut one open and compare it to something else; you will see.

I would not use thier air filters in a turbo diesel either. I have heard of the turbo sucking them in and destroying the turbo. I would cough up the extra bills for a factory Motorcraft air filter just to be safe.

I'm sure you know....your way is the best way to decide when to change your oil.

Driving conditions are a huge factor in how long your oil lasts.

Do you use the same filter for that duration? If so, what brand? Do you use synthetic oil?

Here`s a thread from bobistheoilguy where people post their oil analysis results from diesel engines. You could search for 7.3L and see what others are doing with that motor.

2000 F-350....every 7000 with Rotella. Oil Sample always comes back fine so I bumped up my interval. Been doing this for 80,000 miles and not a hiccup. IMHO it is absolute overkill to change an engine with this much oil capacity and especially a diesel every 3000 miles....unless you run on dirt logging roads for a living.

Boata....where did you get this?

Now if that made that big a$$ 7.3 filter with a drain that would be cool!

00 F-250 145,000 on the clock. I change the oil every 5,000 miles, but it usually always still looks very good. i have about 1700 on the oil change i just did and it looks like it just came from the bottle. Also, the drain valve you are asking about is called a fumoto valve. Best money i have ever spent. No more oily hands, just turn and drain!

Thought I would weigh in. All freeway miles I go 5000. A mix of freeway and in town I go 4000. And all in town I go with 3000. I have heard that stopping and starting is harder on your oil as well as everything else. I use Delo 400.
