Default Check engine alarm on 225 ficht year 2001

I helped a friend put his boat in the water on saturday and after about 10 min of idling out of the harbor the check engine light came on. Shut it down for a min. and started up, 10 min. later same thing. Everything appears to be normal, voltage is 14, oil is full, water pump is spitting. As far as I can tell it was running just fine, but obviously this alarm must mean something. Any ideas?
Thanks, Jim.

It can be a few different items. First take the fuel filter odd the enigne and dump it. If it had water in it then that the problem. There are other sensors on the engine that if they put out a incorect reading the EMM will put it into a default value and the enigine will run fine. Even running ok you want to get it looked at. With a default setting you can use alot more fuel.

You need to know what code set off the "check engine" light.

Happened to me earlier this year... was caused by water in the fuel filter. If the computer did not cause the engine to limit output to 2500 rpms (SLOW system), then this is a very likely cause.

Having lived through twin 250 fichts for 5 years. . ..

Many things will do what you are describing. Anything from an oil pump or fuel pump about to give up the ghost to a water/fuel seperator that badly needs changing.
Will the fuel bulb pump up? and the oil bulb? If not your are getting air into the loop somehow.

In addition, be sure that the voltage never drops below 10 volts for even a second. The computer on that motor does not like low voltage.

Check the fuel/water seperator and fuel filter first. Most likely the motor is starving for fuel. But with those motors...... Anything is possible.

But the best way to find the problem..... Get a shop to tell you what trouble code the motor is sending out.

Hope this helps.

on the system check gauge there are four lights {check engine-low oil-no oil-overheat} that will come on to represent what the prob is,start there for troubleshooting.
