Well, my first thought is it's 31 years old now.
Is it a glass hull/glass topside, glass hull/wood topsides or wood/wood?
How has it been maintained?
How much will it cost you to bring it back to it's original glory?
My first "big boat" experience was on a 1978 Post 42 (1979-1982) and I loved it!! It had the same flat bottom of the earlier Posts and it was quite tough to handle in any kind of a sea. The J&T 6-71's were great though!!
Tell us more about this boat.

Its an all glass boat including the front windshield. I have to go look at it. Do you remember if your fuel tanks were fiberglass or not

you also mentioned it was a tough boat to handle - I heard in a following sea she was a bit slippery

The older hulls were real tough in a following sea - they are very flat at the transom..... (look at one out of the water sometime)

Right around 1986-87 they redesigned the hull and the new ones are much better in that regard.

671s are ok up to ~380HP. At 410 and above they can be hand grenades - the motor design is excellent but people just push 'em too hard.

Detroits tend to be loud, unsocial and somewhat fuel thirsty but they're very easy to work on and even overhaul.

Note that POST has fairly simple systems - which makes for easier maintenance - but that there are some things they omit that I think you need - like exhaust stack temperature alarms.

Post are great boats. Incredible in a head sea but the early models can be trying downsea. Bitefish is correct with the redesigned hull in the mid-eighties. Made a huge difference in the handling.

As I don't know how many hours total time there are the motors I would have some concerns. The motors may have been majored [overhauled] but you are still dealing with blocks, cranks and accessories that still have a lot of hours. Our portside 6-71 TI grenaded at 1200 original hours.

You need to also check the deckhouse for water intrusion around the windows.

Can't answer the question about the fuel tanks. I was a 22 year old kid at the time. The owner was 89. He just wanted me to keep it clean for him, varnish the teak and drive him around. My payment was use of the boat. As for the ride it kept you on your toes. Our inlets can be quite narrow around here. I remember bringing her into Boca Inlet on a outgoing tide and moderate (15 kt.) breeze. The first time it took a 30 degree jog and pointed towards the jetty really got my attention.
It fished well, mostly at Shooter's in Ft. Laud, but that's a whole 'nother story.
Keep us posted.
