I was hoping it was the other way around. I read a seloc for an older mercruiser and I felt it was too general. Maybe their outboard manuals are more detailed. Thanks
Hands down, forget the aftermarket manuals!
Buy a Factory Manual. It is money much more wisely spent.
With a Factory Manual you don't get 1/4 of the book telling you what a wrench is. You do get color wiring digrams. They tell you everything in detail.

The aftermarkets do not!
I just bought a Clymer for a 97 150 hp Johnson and did my first in-depth repair job - replacing the prop shaft seal (and water pump while I had the lower unit off).
I found the Clymer very helpful, although it had one bolt size off in the reaattachment of the lower unit section.
I also wish it had some more detailed instructions for specific jobs inside the lower unit. Instead, it just had instructions for a) replacing the water pump, and b) disassembling the whole damn thing. Anything short of disassembling the entire gearcase required me to sort of figure out on my own what was necessary and what wasn't, and I had to skip around some.
I can't compare it with the Seloc b/c I have never seen it.
I'm inclined to agree about the Factory manuals.
I bought the new Seloc because of some concerns about my year 2000 Merc 125. That book is MISSING the wiring diagram for my engine. And the closest model to it has about three parts present in the diagram that are missing in the component list. Pretty disappointing.

It's a shame to spend money on a Aftermarket manual, only to find out it doesn't have the imfo that you need. Then you turn around and spend the money on the Factory Manual.
I've done it twice over the years.
Wasted Money on the Aftermarket Manuals. I just bought a Factory Manual for my latest motor that I bought. '92 25hp Rude. The Factory Manual was $29.43
Try Factory, I purchased all 3, Seloc, Clymer and Facctory on Ebay. Look under Motorsport>Boats>Manuals. Type in what your looking for. Good Luck.
in some areas one can be better than the other. But a factory manual is tops. I had one for a motor and it even explained exactly how the ignition system worked. Came in handy when trouble shooting cause the procedure in the manual was WRONG. Had a lengthy discussion with a factory tech about it too.
When I inquired at a dealer if I could get a factory manual they said"We arent allowed to sell you that" I told them they were fools, then I ordered it from Mercury over the phone, no problem. Never went back to that dealer and he rightfully went out of business.
