lots of opinions on this one. I think a clean 00-01 Parker 18 is a good bet. Pounds a bit (tabs help) but rock solid, floats like a cork and if you're talking resale, they do VERY well. Mine lasted 2 days at the dealer when I brought it back to broker last year. Like I said, lots of choices out there but I know the Parker well.

You can spend a bit more for a 21, and it's a very nice upgrade.

good luck. happy hunting.

This is like asking what's the best full size pickup truck.

Personally I'm partial to my Edgewater 185cc. I used to own Whalers, including outrages, and think the Edgewater rides better. I think its ride is closer to a 20 or 21 foot boat.

I am actually looking at a 19 outrage right now and wanted to see what else was out there for the price. I thought about edgewater but I have not seen any used ones near NJ. I also looked at Mckee Craft but have not seen one in my price range.

No it's not. In the 17-20' range, he's looking for "...the best used center console for about 15k..."

I agree the Edgewater 185 is a great choice in this size range, as is my McKee Craft 196, however, you can't buy a newer one of those used for $15K. You might find a late 90s Edgewater 185 or McKee Craft 1800 for that price, however. Here's a '98 Edgewater 185, for example:

http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi..._boats=1500232

Looks pretty nice actually.

You might also consider an older Boston Whaler Outrage 18 hull with a newer engine. You can usually find plenty of those in the $12,000-15,000 range, like this one:

Keep us posted on your search!

I did see that 17 mckee crafts are in my range, but would I be better off with the 19 outrage outside?

Not going to promise you a smooth ride, but for the money a Carolina Skiff is tough to beat. The new 198DLV does have an improved ride, but a 198DLX is tough to beat....you could get a new one for around 15k.

If your running 15 to 18 mph, and you have the bow in the water, the ride is greatly improved. Up on full plane in a chop it's a bit better than the DLX models, but still rough in chop. Great boat for the buck though...and very very fuel efficient...a consideration with today's prices.

I would think a Grady White, 18' Sportsman.
I have no experience with these boats but they look good and deep.
On price, you may need to dish out a bit more than 15k.

I'd add May-Craft to the list, too ...

For example, Ed's sells a NEW "1800CC" w/Yama 115 (probably a 2-stroke), trailer for about $12,999

and a NEW "1900CC" w/Johnson 115/4-stroke, trailer for about $15,999. You might want a little more hp on this one though?

GREAT "no frills" boats with an excellent reputation.

As was also said, good used "18" Parker CC would be VERY nice, too - it's a BIG boat for an "18"!

Regards,

often compared to parker is the may craft. new or used. may craft,s really are rock solid boats and carry a quiet smaller price tag . exterior wise if you put the two side by side with no decals you could hardly tell the difference between them, although the parkers resale value will out weigh may crafts. we have a 19 and carry it offshore 3-5 miles on good days. i would not reccomend trying to head out in 4 ft seas literally although i have been caught in 4,s before. we have a lot of 2-3-ft seas with southwest winds and to me thats a plenty in a boat of this size.the big little boat can handle more seas than i care to dare. they are very stable at drift as well. i don,t know if may craft is the best or not but i can say that you get a lot of boat for the money.

The Grady 18 is a great boat. You might find a 98 with a 130HP 2S in that range.

You can find used Edgewater 175s for $15K, with F100s in good shape. Maybe for another 1K an F115.

I switched from a classic 17 montauk whaler to a 185 edgewater after 20 years of owning whalers. Very happy with the change and should have done it
a lot sooner in retrospect. With a 115 4 stroke efi yamaha it gets amazing economy. You get a 20 foot ride on a boat that sips fuel and a very secure feeling.
Took it out for tuna 4 times last summer on 100 mile runs and used less than 20 gallons of gas all day!! An equivalent 18 whaler will need a bigger powerplant and burn a lot more gas. I also like the way that they are built. Mine has a lifetime transferable hull warranty. How many other companies will stand by their
product for life. That gives you an idea of how confident they are about their quality and engineering. NO wood. Top qualilty materials throughout.

In your search for a used boat. You might find , like I did, that the price depends on the powerplant. With the cost of a outboard 4 stroke around 10K now, your 15 K budget might be tough. With the price of gas, you really have to consider the gas consumption. When I was going through the process last year,
I limited my search to a 4 cylinder 4 stroke with low hours for the powerplant. I new that I did not want to go to a 6 cylinder. Big difference in gas consumption. So what I found was that a lot of the older boats had old 2 stroke technology and they were going for around 15 K if they were clean and with a decent trailer. So, I figured that I would soon swap the power for a new 4 stroke...so add 10K to the original price. Unless you get a really lucky or get one from a friend who is willing to give you a great deal, that is what you are going to find. There is a big difference in price of something like a `17 foot montauk compared to a 18-19 foot outrage. You can get a clean 17 footer for 10K. An 18-19 footer is going to cost twice that by the time you get some clean low hour power on to it. Your best bet is to to find a relatively new used boat with low hours on a newer powerplant rather than a discounted older boat with old technology. I got lucky with my edgewater ; two years old with less than 200 hours on a 115 efi yamaha 4 stroke that was meticulously
maintained. Like, you I was open to any of the top name boats but had a short list of either the whaler , edgewater or parkers. Scouts, McKees and gradys are also popular here but they were not on my list. The west coast does not have the variety as the east coast does.

Try a used 17' or 21' Cape Horn. They are VERY tough boats. Bullshipper will tell you why you should avoid the 19'.

I have an Edgewater 185 CC and it will certainly handle the water you are asking about. It has a Yamaha 130 2 stroke, and is relatively efficient, I generally cruise around 25 mph. What is your intended use for the boat? If your a troller, it is well set up for that. I have a T-top and the boat is perfect for 2 people to cast to structure, rips breaking fish etc. With 3 people, 1 generally runs the boat while the other 2 fish. If your into cruising with the family, it offers only cooler seating in the bow. If your a fly fisherman, don't get the T-top and the oversized bow rail will be an impediment.
If you and your buddies are big guys, I would move the batteries to the console. With 2 of us in the stern and having dual batteries, water will enter the boat through the scuppers if backing down on structure or a fish. I have put hundreds of hours on her, and she keeps on ticking. Your in the ball park on the what a late model 185 CC will run you. Good luck with your search and try to think of how you are going to use the boat, layout in small boat this size is extremely important.

There you go....check out the edgewater offered. Its on the big size of your range though. Not as economical at the 185 with the big 200 hp 2 stroke. good for you if you fish three people often.
