I just got an email stating there is a new marked channel into Bimini. Does antone have more info?
Here's the email:
The following was posted on
www.floridasportsman.co web site a couple of days ago:
“Entrance to Bimini is changed. The new channel lies E-W, and is almost off the entrance to Bimini Sands.
They dug a channel through the bar and connected it to the N .Bimini entrance near the "local channel".
It is marked by 3 sets of red/green cans, and we carried 9' through there.
Upon arrival, I instinctively went in the "old way" using the range markers (still there), but they have dumped the dredge fill material south of Bimini Sands breakwater, and large boats will get into trouble if they use the old route at low water.
It also looks difficult to get big boats into Bimini sands. The fill material is actually dry at low tide (an island).
Additionally, they took the dirty sand, and dumped it on the beach on the west side of N. Bimini near the anchorage. It has covered the rocks there and silted over the water near shore.”
Three questions:
1) Is the description of the new channel accurate?
2) It is true that it is difficult to get big boats into Bimini Sands?
3) Any other specific directions you would add to the above?
Glen E, have you heard anything, if not Dottie has the email address of the sender of this email. I'm sure she cc'd you.
