Default Leftovers

I found a 2004 Key West leftover that is thousands less than new. What do you guys think about buying a leftover? I would think the depreciation might be kind of nasty when I roll off of the lot.

The boat is a 2004 Key West 186 DC...going for $24,000 with an F150 and sea-lion galvanized roller trailer. A 2006 probably goes for $28,000.

What do you think?

That is the "new" price 2 years ago--not really a bargin. We had a local RV dealer who kept the same prices on some "new" RV's--he went out of business, with these then 8 year old RV's sitting on the lot.

Nothing wrong with a 2 year old boat--but at this point I would want to see a much more significant discount....

I purchased a left over Key West and did save a fair amount of money. Downside is that the boat, according to NADA or BUC, is already 2 years old so resale may be affected.

Ask to see the original factory invoice and make your deal from there. No matter how you slice it, you are buying a USED boat (albeit with warranty and in GREAT shape). Once you take delivery, no one (future buyers of it) cares that you just bought it. It will still be an almost 3 year old boat.

Make you offer accordingly.

I'd bet a dollar that the dealer has already had to pay off the bank (flooring), so he owns it outright.

Obviously, no one is knocking down his door trying to buy the boat. Make your offer and be willing to walk. He'll call you back. You are a rare individual for him.

Act like it...

Thanks for the advice...he's saying he won't budge on the price but I fired back with some of the comments you guys made. We'll see what he has to say tomorrow.

His original price was $25,900, then he came down to $24000, then I said throw in trim tabs, electronics installation, and stern seats for $24k.

I checked average retail on NADA and for the boat, motor, and trailer, it's $21500. If I got it with trim tabs for $24k, I think it would be a fair deal, considering the 3-year warranty and that it's in perfect condition.

24K and the stuff you are asking for would be a good deal.

I bought my Grady White 19' as a year old left over model - I also bought a snowmobile as a 2 year left over. I think leftovers are the absolute best deal going for 'toys' - save thousands - full factory warranty - sure, if you're the type to turn things over every couple of years resale might be a factor - I hang onto things for awhile and whenever I've sold used - people are interested in the condition of what you're selling - not whether you bought it as a current model or 'leftover'. Sounds like a nice boat - if the dealer throws in the electronics it will be an great deal - sweet motor too!

Why would you buy that when you can buy a 2005 McKee 196 DC with 150 Yamaha and aluminum trailer for 26,500?

I liked the design and layout of the Key West better. I haven't seen a McKee 196 in person yet, though, only pics. The Mckee is only 6" more boat and about 150 lbs. I could use that extra 2,500 on electronics and fishing poles!

Jarnau,
Have you looked at the used 2004 NADA #’s. The best case (retail) including a $1500 trailer is ~ $20.5K plus some extras (e.g. tabs) ~ 21K (these are retail prices for a used 04). On top of this you need to add the fact that the boat sat under the sun for 2+ years. The gel coat may be damaged from the and they are going to sing the song oh: we will have it detailed for you; guess what 2 or 3 outing that the oxidization will appear. If I were you I would look for a used one instead (prob in the $17 or less range) save the money and buy the ext warr, most folks will take care of their boat better than dealers. If you are in for NEW boat shopping then you need to bargain and learn to walk away. If they are firm on the $24 then let him sit on it for another year or 2 until they come to their senses and walk away and find another seller.

As with anything else, if you find what you believe it is a good deal then it is.

I bought a leftover SeaPro (2000 Model) in 2001, ran it for 3 years and sold it last spring for darn near what I paid for it. Being a leftover, you may not have the bargaining leverage on options, but just factor that into the equation

When looking at a left over you need to look at NADA retail and figure that the boat you are buying is likely in mint condition as long as it is not a demo. It does not matter what he was asking or what he is asking you need to look at is though it's a used boat. Look at boat trader to get an idea on asking price for a used model and this should be the range.

As a happy former owner of a 2002 KW 19cc and having a friend who owns a McKee it's not even a close comparison. Go for the McKee. KW is a nice boat and will serve its purpose but McKee is top of the line.

Thanks for the props.

Although I do think that Key West 186 is a pretty nice boat. However, I think you could probably buy a brand new 2006 with a Yamaha F150 and aluminum trailer for $26,000+- from Hudson's in Salisbury, MA. Is $24,000 really that great a deal for a 2 year leftover?

In the interest of full disclosure, it should be pointed out that FireFly recently purchased a leftover 2005 Scout 242 Abaco. I know for certain that he did his homework with regards to pricing and comparison values and got a tremendous deal.

When you buy a leftover boat, it may also have old fuel in the tank. Make sure it runs OK.

I bought my Grady White as a leftover and saved alot of money.

I also bought a 04 leftover in Nov found it on the internet at an out of state dealer and after a couple emails back and forth we got together on phone and made a deal with a creditcard deposit .At the time the local dealer lost his dealership and a new one had not been appointed yet. Most of the manufactures want you to buy local unless its a leftover or demo then the rules dont apply. Make sure you have any future warranty issues worked out on paper before you finalize it . there are good deals on leftovers around but have to be ready to do it once you find it .

I drove 6 1/2 hours last weekend (one way) to get my leftover, 2004 motor 2005 boat. Checked with my local dealer about the boat and the boats no haggle price was 18995.00 without trolling motor or 2 Fish finders. I got mine rigged with trolling motor and 2 fish finders for 12K. Get all the same warrenty as if I bought it a year ago. In my case it was a no brainer......

I've been looking at the major websites (boattrader.com, yachtworld.com) for '04-'05 boats. Most of the ads indicate whether the boat is new or not. Find one older than '06 and you have a leftover.

Hudson's is looking for $29000 for that boat, and not particularly willing to negotiate. If I found a new one at a local dealer for $26k, I'd be all over it, but the F150 upgrade seems to drive up the cost by a few thousand.
